I'm rebuilding a Cat C Tuscan where the usual suspects had plonked an 'almost' repaired body and most of the mechanicals into a freshly blasted, zinc sprayed and powdercoated chassis.

Of course, in the oourse of doing the above, said plonkers had gouged/nicked/scratched the powdercoating in several places, so after cleaing/degreasing the lot I am in the process of touching up the bare spots with zinc spray and white paint after that.

Before I build everything back up again I would like to protect the chassis - especially the top parts of the chassis rails that you can't reach anymore - but I don't want to turn my gleaming, clean chassis into a sticky mess. Especially not as I need to bolt all the (new/refurbed) mechanicals to it!

Is there any rustproofing top coat out there that is safe to go over powdercoat and acryl paint and will dry to a transparent (don't mind a bit of yellowing) and hard to the touch finish?

Thanks in advance (y)

I've used oil based polyurethane varnish before (on a mini subframe) to great affect (30 years ago).... could wipe clean after several years.

To protect chassis areas that can't be seen once the body is on I have used Denzo Tape (an oil/grease impregnated cloth that sticks like sht to anything it touches. Used by utility companies to wrap steel pipes in the ground - available from many building / civil/ plumbing outlets.

Worth a read:

Or the motorcycle world seems to love ACF50 as its invisable, but it does need recoating once a year.

Interesting. The Bilthammer derusting products are excellent.

Not so sure about the ACF - it's good if you leave things, so spraying the lawnmower and storing over winter was fine. Cleaning the bike needs to be reapplied so either I didnt apply it correctly or missed bits but it didn't stop winters corrosion for me.

I test sprayed some of this on my chassis and it seems to dry quite hard but does have a yellow colour to it.

I have used a clear Yacht varnish suitable for metals over powder coat and paint, it worked fine.
