Top Gear GTI - slams TVR !!!!
Discussion
Anyone else see the Top Gear GTI tonight?? they were doing their review of the JD powers servey. The Chimaera was outside the top 170
!! they had a chap (David Wilson) on there who owned a Chimaera for 18 months to 2 yrs it was off the road for 6-8 weeks (not bad i thought!!) the main issue he had was a broken door lock - he then told you how he got in - DUH !!!! They had Ben on the show tying his best to field the questions !!

If im right that program is three or four years old, and was the first time T.V.R were entered in the J.D. power survey.I think the program was unfair in including T.V.R in the survey seeing that T.V.R.are small volume manufacturer and all the cars are hand built, there are bound to be quality issues,no more than ferrari or lotus and i dont recall them being in that survey at all,if im wrong please correct me

Agree with you. Sat down to watch it and realised it was old cack so logged on here instead! Also agree it was unfair to include TVR. Certainly don't think Ferrari/Maserati/Lotus owners would give an @rse about JD Power surveys...

Do you really car what Top Gear say. In all fairness, if your happy with your car what does it matter what some TV idiots think?
Can you imagine that there are dumpties out there who would buy a car as a result of the JD Power Survey. Its for them really no one else could care less.
I'm sure there are lots of people who will buy a car based upon what the survey says, but if they are true to their research they will buy Skodas, Vdubs and Scoobys. Not really our market.
Rememer this is the programme where the tall bloke with the bad hair (can't remember his name) thought a car called a Malia (?) made by Daihatsu was fantastic !

The JD Power survey is taken quite seriously by manufacturers, but as said before, only really applies for cars produced in large numbers. If its the survey I remember, the Chimaera still finished above several Vauxhall models, a company that spends billions in R & D but can still produce tat!!
Since the survey covers 2-3 year old cars, I also feel it will be distorted by company car drivers (unlike in USA where it all started?). They are more likely to give a good slagging off to a car they didn't really want while private buyers will praise "their own good choice and taste"
No wonder the top 20 is full of small japenese cars. Reliable, yes, but also mostly private sales.

Zippy500 - fair point, though not the one I was pee'd off about. It was the 'oh and these are the two methods i used to gain entry' comment given that some Chimaera's are parked on the street, some numpty might give it a go

Over a number of years I have had many cars and without fail when I have read up about them in magazines very rarely have they got a good write up!Despite this I have never had a car other than a Jaguar XJS which has caused me any bother,I might add this includes 5 TVRs.Therefore I have come to the conclusion that owning and using a vehicle every day is different to a journalist driving it for a couple of hours, and I now take very little notice of the motoring press.
Isn't the JD Power survey about the quality/reliability of the cars AND the service from the dealer network.
Lets face it guys - TVRs are not reliable in relative terms and its pot luck whether you get a dealer who is serious about their service levels.
In my extensive survey of one: My 3 yr old Griff has been with the dealer for 8 weeks since I bought it in April, a further week in odd days with my local specialist and I will be without it for a further week in September when it has a new camshaft.
Some of my issues have been the dealer failing to do what they were supposed to do. The camshaft is just unlucky.
Anyway - compared to other cars and dealer networks TVR is poor in terms of reliability and customer service. But on the whole TVR owners are massively satisfied with their cars.
Instead of moaning that the survey is unfair why not say - yup, its a fair cop - a TVR does need looking after to be reliable - but I still love my car to death?

I've just had a conversation re that program
Trying to justify TVR ownership, I shouldn't have bothered. It's an extremely good value supercar, I smile every time I get in it. When was the last time you got out of your car at work grinning from ear to ear.
I say "What do you think of your car ?"
They say "It's OK, gets me from A to B"
Just like the f

Hmm, Ive had a Scooby and a Griff 500. Maybe I'm an oddball... mind you, we knew that anyway.![]()
Lots of us run two cars, one for pleasure and one to go to Tescos/use for work.
feck JD power for the pleasure car, buy with your heart first.
For the shopping cart, go JD power. The less hassle/you have to spend on the second car you dont give a sh1te about, the better.
All IMO of course
As for reliability ive had my 94 4.0 H.C chim for six months and not had a problem,on the other hand i had my range rover 4.6 vogue two months when the air suspension failed just outside the warranty, alas i was faced with a bill for £2,500'T.V.R.,s by comparison are very cheap to live with
ap smith - oddballs unite! our household has a chimaera 450, a WRX, and a Caterham. Now all we need is something sensible....hang on, why do we need something sensible??
My Chimaera has been 100% reliable in just over two years (touch fibreglass)- a stone through the radiator could have happened to anybody. And re dealers, the TVR lot are well known to be highly variable (still deciding where to get my next service), but they're not the only ones - a friend has no end of bad unhelpful service....from his BMW dealer.

Interesting that so many TVR Chimp owners have had no probs with their vehicles; must admit, I ran a 4.5 for 3 months before getting a Cerb and it was pretty flawless too (except for footwell leaks when parked in heavy rain and a resistor [2 minute fix] which blew wiping out the front dips) and extremely flexible. Good around the urban crawl and obviously Skyline bait when outta town.
But clearly, Top Gear are being ninnies of the first order here. Criticising TVR for reliability issues is as useful as approaching the Iraqi leader for a quick after dinner speech at The Guild of Cambridgeshire Flower Arrangers Society, i.e. not very.
And what a homosexual this dork must be: oh, diddums, does the door not open - you nonce! Bloody hell, if that was all I ever had to worry about with TVR ownership I'd still be in one!
Perhaps this program, like so much else in UK2002, is now dumbed down to an androgenously synthetic standard wherein emaciation is the name of the game and everyone conforms to the 'accepted norms' of Tony's bankrollers, be it Lord Sainsbury, Dickie Branson or - you guessed it - J.D.Power himself.
Stinks to high heaven. Bring on Mdme Guillotine and feed her first with that rump of a Government...
