Would you invest in TVR?
Discussion
Hypothetically, imagine the Russian chappie never bought TVR, this is the scenario:
1) On paper the historic financial results of TVR are poor. The company's not making money and its Balance Sheet doesn't look particularly strong. Although I realise Balance Sheets can often be artificially low because stuff is often depreciated at a greater rate than the market reality (property for example). However, purely from a financial perspective the company's not worth very much - any monies paid is virtually all for the goodwill (which is significant, I'd suggest).
2) TVR's seem to have a loyal user base and very strong brand.
3) Seems to me that there are some very clever TVR owners around (with engineering nouse, marketing experts, business people, etc.)
4) I've no idea how many TVR's are out there, let's take the figure of 20,000 (pure guess). If each owner were to invest, say, £500 it would value the company at £10m - which would be generous, in my view. (I realise that not every owner would do this, but I'm being hypothetical!)
5) Put in some highly experienced managers and marketeers and financially incentivise (a percentage of profit) and a punt is taken!
Would you invest in this business venture?

Yes and I could do the PR for you - some Welsh genes, political experience, gift of gab etc. You need Patrick Hurst from N. Ireland to be CEO, he currently is MD of big company making vehicles and understands manufacturing plus he is a serial TVR owner.
PS Do you know something that we don't? Errr...TVR for sale again?!?

The bit that interests me about TVR is that with an advertising budget of naf all they are a globally known brand due to smart product placement and the aura they generate.
If you factor in their potential as a brand there is a long way for them to go if properly supported and developed and they certainly are worth a punt.
Unfortunately a smart Russian got there first.
Good luck nick-I think the investment will prove to be very sound indeed.

I'm just about to invest a considerable sum in TVR. They are kindly giving me a sagaris in return!
It sounds quite wierd but I actually like to think of helping the company out by buying one of it's products. That's why I try to buy british where possible and within reason. It's also why I'd never buy an M3 or 911, no matter how good they are thought to be.

Yes I would, but I would buy outright.
I dont do committees, I dont do shareholders and I certainly dont do fan clubs.
Is your real name Peter Wheeler?
Im straight from the Wheeler school of how things should be run.
My company, my money, my decisions.
Design the cars I want, then let the ppl decide if they want them.
Id go to Max & Bernie and say what do you want me to do in order for me to get one of ours as a Pace Car for F1 and the GT series?
Id also stop
ing about with 600 horses from the Typhon and make the top whack 400 range 7-800horses. Bring the Speed 12 back, offer it as 2+2 or 2seat. Take the whole new range to the Motorshow, negotiate a decent fee for the biggest stand there. Get an AMG Merc, an M5 & M6 Bimmer and a 911, cover them in shrouds and then in front of the entire press on trade day, Id trash them. Unveil the new 7-800horses TVR's, 2 seats and 2+2 and say boys, you want to play the who has the biggest horsepower willy contest...well you just lost. You would cause a stampede for orders for just about every British sports car nut in the place. It would be huge press, The Sun would start playing on Britain V Germany and frankly thats only ever good news for non german car makers. Lets face it, everybody loves sticknig it to Merc, BMW and Porsche.
Id then make an abolutely balls out maximum attack campaign to beat Porsche at Le Mans. Nothing sells British sports cars like Le mans success. Never has in 80odd yrs, never will. Immediately after that, huge sales campaign in France, Germany, Russia and the rest of Europe. Once again, everbody likes to see the Germans get blob
ed, even the Germans who love British sports cars. Id make sure there was the Mother of all parties arranged for Le Mans after the victory, then Id do it again when we got back home through Blackpool. Instant hero worship and it has just bought you a full order book for the next 2 yrs.
Its high profile, high risk and totally Un-PC.
It is very Blackpool though and that to me is where its at

I'm certainly not from the Peter Wheeler school of how things should be done - just look at the trading results of the company. If it was a dog you'd put it down, quite frankly. I know where you're coming from in terms of "not running a company by committee" - I concur with that. Most succesful companies have a "motivational autocrat" at the helm. That would be my approach.
If I was running TVR the first thing I'd do is put the prices up. The reason being, owning a Tiv is a decision of the "heart". It's not a rational decision but an emotional one. If you ask a Tiv owner why they bought one, they'll tend to say: the sound, the shape, the image, the performance, etc.. Not many will say that it was bought as a sound investment. Point being, If you raise prices this will go straight on the bottom line.
From a position of profit I'd (a) get the best brains in the country working on reliability and (b) focus on agressive sales and marketing.

It wasnt profitable in the last few yrs because its been selling w@nk cars! The T350 and Tuscan are/were naff. I wouldnt hold out much hope of the Tuscan 2 selling like hot cakes either. Now the Saggy, TVR wont be able to build them fast enough!
