New roof - advice and costs
Discussion
Hi,
I would like to get my roof replaced. The struts are fine but the roof is original and not in the best order.
I would like to replace it, I am now based on Shropshire/Staffs border pretty much so Manchester down to Birmingham is fine for location.
Has anyone else had this done, what is the cost I am looking at?
Lastly, there is a hell of a whistle coming though the window on the drivers side, I think the seals need replacing. Again, advice and costs on this would be great!
TVR is back on the road now, been a year in the garage due to the birth of our first child. Today it did 125 miles from storage to our new house and didn't miss a beat (once it was jump started).

Not used them myself but heard good things of the Hood Guys in Birmingham.
I was fortunate to get a new old stock hood from one of the ex TVR main dealers and had it fitted by Dave the Trimmer.
It's an expensive job that can be so annoying every time you look at it if it's not "quite right", I personally wouldn't go anywhere without recommendations and seeing some of their work first.

if it helps price wise, I have been quoted approx £750 to supply and fit a roof (panel and folding bit) to my Chimaera by Classic Car Services in Leicester. They were recommended by a local TVR Dealer so suspect they are pretty reliable, although I have not actually had the work done yet. It was booked in to be done before my steering rack gave up and needed a refurb.
I suspect an S3 would be very similar costs

I used The Hood Guy last year to do a new window in my Tamora. Seemed like a nice guy. Did a really good job with no problems.
He had in a Stag and a Mercedes SL that he was doing hoods for, both at the bare frame stage.
I brought some new door seals and he changed them over for me while doing the windows. Made a neat job of it. S forum will tell you what seals to buy and where to get them.

I think that I will have to charge him a fiver for the oil filter, but the labour cost.......
I carried out a bit of research about hoods and there are different grades of mohair material. They mostly seem to come from the Haartz Corporation and the better quality is called Twillfast, rather than the more basic Stayfast. I looked at this, partly for the reason that I was looking at restoring J-LLO to its original state with a tan hood. However, that colour is difficult to keep clean. I looked at dark green and even used green Renovo on top of the black Renovo which is on top of the original tan! The idea was to get an idea of the effect of a new green roof. The result - a black hood with a faint green tinge! So I have decided to have a conventional black hood.
My main reason for a new hood is the poor state of the rear window which is split, murky and pockmarked. As the hood is original and recoloured it was not worth the cost of a new window.

As well as the mohair and window vyback quality; I'd suggest being very robust on establishing expected life of stitching material, especially if the car stays outside. What seemed like a great job for me about 3 years ago has literally started falling apart this winter and an approach to the trimmer concerned has resulted in no acceptance that was far too short a life (in the context of this being the first change of the original on a 97 car). Any stress on the seams sees the thread popping like perished elastic. Unimpressed on grounds of material quality and customer care My main reason for a new hood is the poor state of the rear window which is split, murky and pockmarked. As the hood is original and recoloured it was not worth the cost of a new window.

Just had a complete new hood from car hoods northern fitted to my chimera inc the targa.
Main thing was they were able to fit it at my home address, the fitter was based in Stoke on Trent and travels all over the country,I am based in Warwickshire
The hood was made by a company called bas, apparently the original suppliers of the original hoods so fit was perfect
Fitter was spot on and overal quality is excellent, price was 750 all in
I'm not sure if the hood replaced was the original but the new one is quite a lot thicker and also the clear plastic is noticeably thicker, took a whole day and that included the fitter removing and refitting the back base rail twice as he was unhappy with the first fit,all in all, very happy

Thanks very much, got in touch with the Hood Guys in Birmingham. £650 plus VAT. Not bad at all.
Had my Chim roof replaced by them about 5 years ago, and price was around that figure. Can't fault the quality, I left the car in one Saturday and picked it up the next. The attention to detail impressed me - the fabric grain direction matches exactly on the hoop and panel. I wasn't even aware that could have been an issue, and I didn't think I was OCD in any way, but now that I have noticed it I smile inside every time I see it.
