Protection after polishing alloy?

Anyone who's polished any of the alloy under the bonnet what do you use to protect it afterwards?

Do you lacquer it or just keep it regularly polished?

Never ever lacquer it.

It will eventually flake off and look crap.

I am afraid that a good Solvol once a month is the only way forward...

I was told Mr Sheen does a good job, just spray it on and don't wipe it. When you clean the wheel next time, it just falls off (apparently).

A light smear of Vasceline or 3 in 1 oil.

I give the ally a good spray with WD40 (being careful to miss the parts where slippage=bad). Unfortunately all of the shiny bits are right where the water gets in so it doesn't take long for the shine to go...

Looks like Pat's advice (Autosol plus elbow grease) stands!

polish it up with Silvo silver wadding - the liquid in the wadding prevents it oxidising so quickly...

Works a treat on unlaquered alloy rims, so would probably suit elsewhere.
