Got a trolley jack yesterday and some calliper paint, got a few questions before I start.

Does the handbrake need to be on, car in 1st (very slight slope, not much but enough to roll) does the cerbie have any hidden compartments with tools to take the wheels off? I assume its a piece of cake to do?

One more question... is more than one coat of paint on the callipers necessary, or the norm?

I aksed Joolz about this once and he said several very light coats to build up the colour were better than one thick coat otherwise you will get paint run - which you don't want.

are you using foliatec? ive used that stuff loads and its like painting with glue. and takes weeks to dry, so, if i were you, id try and get on as best a coat as can be achived and leave it at that. cos touching up will take ages cos the brush wont move over the partly dry paint.

also, be super-careful that you dont get any on the pistons or the boot covers over them cos it WILL cause them to perish and let in all manner of crap. which will cause them to seize, and possibly fail as you go to fast over a railway crossing, resulting in an unpleasant 'moment'. not that that has happened to me. nope, no-way, nu-huh.

Loosen the nuts a half turn or so, jack up and whip it off

2 or 3 coats should do the trick, but give it a little scrub before to get the crusty bits off if they haven't been cleaned in a while. Maybe a clean with paint thinner after that.

I was told today NOT to jack up the cerb using the outrigger lifting front and rear wheels on one side at the same time... I was also told today not to jack at the front only, as this may cause the windscreen seals to go pear shaped, and the whiteness get in under them where it should be black.

Decided not to jack the car up and after reading label on paint, it says to leave to dry for 24 hours so Im not going to be painting today

Its halfords paint. It says if you want to apply 2 coats, do the second 20 minutes after the first. OR, if left longer than a few hours, you need to wait 6 weeks before applying the second coat

May as well do it one weekday morning, leaving a TVR undriven for 24 hours is ludicrous.

What are the rubber boots? Instructions mention masking this off, but feck knows what or where they are?

sorry, poor description. the pistons that pull and push the calipers apart are shielded from ingress of brake dust etc but little rubber kind of corrugated tubes. youll see em when the wheels are off. well, you can on every car ive ever had the wheels off on (good english there nerv..). i see no reason why the TVR calipers should be any different. that said...

just be sure not to get any paint on them, which is not easy cos its fiddly. especially if youve got giant useless club fists like mine.

lemme know how you go old bean

Ohh piss off

Tis nought but a wee splash of colour

Besides, I've already got a big amp powering an underside neon city

Help: Ive been told to jack up the outriggers, then was told not to, then told to jack up behind the front wheel, then told not to, then told to, I think Ive finally got it...

Its ok to jack up a cerbie on the cross member/outrigger (triangular section) right behind the front wheel (and right in front of the back wheel) using only one jack... IF the car is only raised a small amount, the 'small amount' meaning the car wont bend too much, and bugger the windscreen seals. I assume Ive been well advised and that its ok to proceed and jack up with only one jack, just enough to get the wheels off?

And if anyone has calliper pics or links to the thread with calliper pics (which I cant find) please post

Took a while Bob but you got there in the end

Painted calipers do look fantastic, but if you are worried wait a little while & get someone to show you the jacking points etc. so you can be relaxed when you do the job.

See you soon

Im pretty cool with the points, its just that every which way I turned, someone gave me a reason why not to use the places advised A few calls later and Im finally confidant, about as confidant as Leonardo Dicapro would be in that titanic scene, hell I was even spotted yesterday standing on my pumped up halfrauds trolley jack yelling to the neighbourhood "Im king of the callipers!!"

good man yourself, go get amongst it and let us see how it looks.

also, please note that once the paint is on your hands it will never come off. ever. ever. so best fashion it into some form of tribal tattoo else youre gonna look stoopid

and some degrease spray will really help you out before you paint. on the callipers that is.

good luck old bean

I always jack mine up in the centre of the side. Midway between the front and rear wheels. That way you jack up the whole side at once and the chassis isn't going to twist. To jack up the front only, and you have a long enough jack, locate it under the front crossmember. Right by the towing hook.

Oh yeah, and most importantly, DONT ever work on your car with it held up by a jack alone. Please, ALWAYS position axle stands under the chassis too.

Hope this helps BOB.

Jacking at the side in the middle, between front and rear wheels is on a thin piece of tubular steel (which admitedly has a cross member (middle strut bit joining it) and I was told this is not a good idea.

Also, re: axel stands, I dont have any, are they totally necessary if my car is only jacked to minimum height and Im only painting? hmmm

youll be fine, you wont need axle stands if youre not gonna be under the car. just go careful, might be an idea to slide the removed wheel under the car as an extra bit of protection.
