Rear number plate-back lit but can't see it!

Hi all, just looked at my Chimeara (97 500) and noticed that even though the lights are on I cant see the number plate at all on the back. All the other lights work fine, actually one front side light seems dim, but even though the two bulbs are working behind the plate...nothing. Is there a special thin plate for the light to go through or something? Lucky not to have been pulled over by now!

I too, however, drove around for yonks with an unlit plate. Even persuaded the MOT man that's how it should be!
