Where is the diff filler?

I understood that for the GKN diff it was on the right hand side, but all I can see is what looks like a block burst plug about half way up? Is this it, and what sort of tool do you need to undo it?

Should have found this out before draining the old oil out...

if you havn't already done it,

a standard 1/2" socket extention fits. put both long and short from a std sockey set together (no socket) and undo the plug from the R/H/S wheel arch.

Fill till oil is level with the hole, ie starts to
weep out.

Err, not on mine it wasn't. Started to look about for alternative means of entry and found the fill hole at the back of the diff (remember this is a GKN, not a BTR).

It's a real pig to get out, as access is blocked by the chassis crossmember (that the silencer hanger is mounted to) and the fibreglass mounding that drops down for the fuel tank / boot.

I ended up using a self gripping wrench on the sides of the protruding plug and undid it that way.

Once undone, I filled using a 12" length of hose pushed into the filler hole attached to the bottle.

Once it started to weep (approx 1.75 litres) fiddled about trying to relocate the filler plug with two fingers over the chassis rail.

Job done.

mines a GKN and its in the side!

BTRs have no cooling fins at the back, is that what you have?

mines a late 94 and thats the cross over point to T5/GKN and later 94/5 to Serp.

sounds more like a BTR. could be wrong, quite often am!

It has cooling fins at the back. If you have the mk ! bible, it's the one on the right at the top of page 103. You can actually see the filler plug at the top of the picture on the back of the fins.

It's also the same one as shoen in the Tuscan racer on page 104. I noticed that this photo has been printed upside down!
