I peeled off a main dealer's advertising sticker from my rear screen and it has left me with a rectangular sticky mess where the sticker used to be!
I have tried renovo plastic screen polish and Autoglym glass cleaner with no luck - just smeered it.
Does anyone have a clue how to get it off without damaging the plastic? (I am afriad to try meths in case it melts it or turns it opaque)

most glues these days are petroleum based.
Unfortunately, so are most plastics, including the ones used for rear screens!
I'd be very careful before tyring any alcohol or petroleum based solvent - I tried petrol once on a rigid plastic (polycarbonate) aeroscreen on one of my other cars and it turned cloudy very quickly.
Just a thought...me being paranoid and all...but how about the polishes/cleaners that are specifically manufactured for the plastic windows on sports car hoods.
There is a group test on them in this month's Classic and Sportscar magazine, IIRC.
...at least you could be confident that they won't do any harm?

Go the WD40 route as it will not damage your screen.
Most solvents will do it irrepairable damage. Even the Orange based cleaners made by Swarfega (and B&Q) are quite harsh and could affect teh plastic.
Green scouring pad
is not to be advised.
WD40 may take a little longer but will be the easiest on the bank balance.
all IMHO of course
