My car came with some lovely miswiring under the dash, one of which was the heater switch. The symptom was that that when I turned the fan onto position 1, I got the low speed (great) but any other position switched it off. Initially, I thought the problem was with the heater resistor but I managed to test this the following way.

I disconnected all the connections to the fan switch and I took the power feed which was the connection with the two green wires and then with a piece of wire, carefully, touched them to the other 3 wires in turn. This resulted in the correct fan speeds for low (white/green), medium (yellow/red) and high (yellow). That meant that the fan resistor was OK so either the problem lay with the switch or the switch connections. Luckily, it was the connections to the switch, mine had been connected incorrectly.

The correct connections (for my car) were:

Pin Function Wire Colour
1 Low White/green
2 12V 2x green
3 Not used Not used
4 Med Yellow/red
5 High Yellow

Apologies for the blurry image of the back of the switch.

Once the connections were cleaned up and attached to the back of the switch correctly, it worked! All three fan speeds present.

For reference, a replacement fan switch details are:

OPEL ASCONA C HEATER FAN CONTROL LEVEL SWITCH 90103289

These are now obsolete but can still be bought on the internet if you search for the part number at the end or the usual TVR spares companies.

Next, to cure the fan noise...
