Sloane Square yesterday evening, blue griff drive past with 2 blokes in baseball caps and a woman sitting sideways on the back shelf. Is this not

a) Illegal
b) Stupid
c) Rather dangerous

I am assuming all 3 unless there is something I don't know - ready to be corrected.

For the record, I passed a lovely silver Tuscan about 5 minutes later on the Kings Road.

apart from the obvious 3 people in a 2 seater car illgality, just sounds plain dangerous, even at slow posing speeds.

I'd say all three.

- but haven't you ever used yer open-top car as a trolley - I know I have. Roof off, stuff poking out the top.

I wouldn't be prepared to go very quickly loaded like that - say 15 - 20mph, no more. And I wouldn't have driven around London, either...

So yes - pretty stupid IMO - but not in every case...

Its illegal.

Mind you, I have done it, once, for about 500 yards

But with the roof on.

Amusing to say the least

Ah, the fun of having someone on the parcel shelf, there's not much I can think of that's more fun than that, just think of all those crazy days of fun you can have fitting 3 into a Griff - happy days indeed

People don't realise that even at very low speeds 10-15 mph, a person has a lot of momentum if one has to stop suddenly.
I for one wouldn't want someone smacking me in the back of the head, and I certainly wouldn't want the consequences of an injureed person in my car.
There are certain people here in this village who will be in that much of a rush on a morning (because their lives are so important ) who think nothing of sitting junior on the passenger seat and setting off to school or nursery, without, yes, without fastening seatbelts. These are kids of 3 to 5.
They think by driving at 25mph they'll be OK.
Speed kills. Right.

Thats how I used to be carted round when Peter wanted Dads sierra or pickup.

I also shared the dog seat in the white elephant.

Never did me any harm...thought it was quite fun at the time.

I had to carry a third person once.

Long story, was at a night club, car got locked in the car park. Only got the car out at 6am the next morning. The girl I had given a lift to the club was very drunk and the guy she had bumped into was also drunk. I Didn't want to let them go off together but the guy wouldn't pi55 off home on his own I initially refused to give him a lift.

After discovering that I couldn't get out of the carpark he said he would get the car out and if he could would I give him a lift. Cut a long story short, He couldn't get the car out

So the three of us waited in the lobby at the Meadows Car Park in Chelmsford from 3am to 6am on a Saturday morning in January.

I couldn't really tell him to piss off after 3 hours in the cold (although I should have done). so I gave both of them a lift from Chelmford to Billericay

Bit of a disaster that evening

I would do it if it was'nt ilegal, no-one used to worry about the momentum of a passenger in the back until rear seatbelts became a legal requirement for cars manufactured after 1986

That's a fair point but what about the driver of the other (theoretical) car if one of the three is killed due to the whole parcel shelf thing?

I remember as a child, driving around sitting on bags of sand in the back of my uncles pick up.

Yup, been there done that. Had seven in a Spitfire once (only drove a few hundred yards and didn't get the promised shag that evening either ).
My dad used to out three of us in the back of whatever Escort van he owned at the time, two on the wheelarches and one behind the passenger seat with legs over the edge of the load bay. We'd go to Whitby like that!
Mind you, we also had to run 17 miles to school, barefoot over broken glass, after a 26 hour shift as rent boys at Middlesbrough Docks, and it never did us any harm...

I had two passengers on the back of my Raleigh Chopper. It made steering impossible, so we crashed!

I remember, years ago... 7 of us all squeezing into a mini Happy days, but in todays PC society, everyone including me is programmed to agree with points 1,2 and 3.

You should see first hand how many people fit into pickup trucks, cars, busses and on motorbikes in other countries... the equivalent of 7 people in a griff everyone does it, its a way of life

we've probably all done similar but it is bloody stupid really.

If you've ever accidentally walked into something, bear in mind you are travelling at about 2 or 3 mph and it hurts.

Then imagine travelling in an open car, its extremely easy to get to 20 or 30mph & from inside the car it feels very safe. Then imagine flying through the air, much like a crashing motorcyclist but without helmet, gloves, boots or kevlar pads...ouch!
