Hot relay

Just been for the MOT in the Wedge, and noticed whilst fiddling around in the footwell that the fuel pump relay (metal body) was incredibly hot - so hot that I couldn't hold my finger on it for more than a couple of seconds. Anyone know whether this is considered normal, or is it indicative of a problem? I supsect the latter, as I have had a very intermittent problem with no power to the fuel pump, which seems be cured when checking the tightness of the relay and surrounding loom.

High current will produce heat,and a higher than normal current could be caused by a number of things,poor connections,or a pump thats on its way out being just two of them.The heat you describe from the relay doesnt sound normal,but they will get warm.Though ive never checked how hot mine get,i certainly wouldn't be impressed if this much heat was considered normal.Check out the connections and replace the relay(s) if in doubt,and use the correct bosch ones,these only cost £7 or so from a bosch agent,so its not worth the risk.
