Sale to buyer from Portugal
Discussion
Helio de Oliveira is the dealer in Portugal (Portugal 226154071) and he has Cerberas in stock or can source cars, so it's a bit strange that your buyer hasn't gone through him or at least is known to him? Helio speaks and writes perfect English. I understand that there is a fairly hefty "car tax" in Portugal, so selling and registering Cerberas there is "difficult". Inform the DVLA when you export the car, the buyer might want to leave it registered in your name.
Re payment, you want a banker's draft and their contact details, so you can check out the bank is actually genuine and then contact the the bank to ensure the draft is genuine - do you speak the lingo? If not, find somebody here that does. (The banks in the big cities will have people people who speak English, but they might not totally understand what your are saying, so better safe than sorry. I bet the banks in the small towns/villages won't have an english speaker.)
Alternatively, the money could be TT'ed into your account, but don't release the vehicle until your bank tells you the funds are deffo cleared - the buyer won't like this as it could be several working days, and looking at it from his point of view, he doesn't know if you are dodgy or not.

Excellent, thanks for the information. Hopefully everything will check out fine, but I guess its best to wear your ultra paranoia hat to be careful. I did read about the issues with wires and banktransfers, so have suggested payment in cash, verfied at my local bank in the city.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Re my comment about banker's draft, you need to cheque (sic) with the issuing bank whether it is real and if it can be stopped and that it is a cheque from them to you, rather than from the buyer to you. I understand it has to be very special reasons for stopping a banker's draft - you're holding his family hostage etc. I trust big international banks (no choice not to really), but I am wary of cheques drawn on small indy banks.
Re cash, I've paid large sums of cash into banks (with the buyer present) but my money has always been bagged seperately even though the cashier has checked it at the time. I guess (and the purpose of this post is so that maybe somebody in a bank can confirm or not), is that the money is checked again later for forgeries; and if lots of new sequential numbers, to see if it is nicked. So again be careful if it's all new.
Has the buyer been to see your car? Has he paid somebody to inspect it? Has he been in touch with Helio about looking after it for him over there?

The potential buyer has spoken to Helio, so is aware of the process and documents required. He is arranging to come over, with the funds, in order complete the transaction. So he would view the car and then if every is in order we would complete transaction. I have pointed him in the direction of the local dealer who knows my car.
I guess what I am wondering - is that if I ask my bank to verify the money before I accept it, that there can not be any subsequent issues. I am going to pop into my local branch if I have time and check with them.

Bank drafts are not a wholly secure form of settlement and payment can (and has!) been witheld if the item has been reported lost/stolen . . . so be wary. I would suggest you have the money wired directly to your account - the funds are cleared. Or, as has been said, insist on cash but be prepared for the inconvenience of banking it.
