insurance payoff/ripoff

Andrew,
Rule Number One should be "Never accept their first offer"!
Of course they're going to try and fob you off: they're in business to make money and they want it to stay that way.
Now that you've received their offer you should try to get as much info about the value of an identical car as you can - perhaps as someone from the TVR Car Club to give you a valuation? Try also Parker's guide, some Insurance companies use them as a guide for valuations. Also, see if you can find a similar 'S' for sale and get some details.
Basically, get as much info as you can to back up your rejection of their crappy offer.
O'course, you could just bite the bullet and take the money...

I'd imagine you'll need to find a number of other cars in the same condition and age as the one you used to have. Present the case that if you had to replace your car with another of the same age and condition then you'd have to spend £XXXX and here's the cars that are available right now that back this figure up. Your insurance is there to cover you for replacing what you have lost with the same car.

I've seen somewhere recently, and can't remember if it is on this site or the TVRCC one, the values of cars, dates purchsed, mileages, conditions etc, all posted by owners. Its a good reference point for car values in TVR's small market space.
Vodka I'll look more carefully to find it. Seems to me its just what you need to shore up your claim.

Found it.
Its on the TVR webmart. A valuation of recently (and not so recently purchsed TVRs, all models.
Here's the URL:

Go for it Vodka - hopefully you'll have an extra buck or two to get the first round in when we go out for our jaunt!

It's a great con. My insurers pay 'book price' if I total the car. When quizzed, they confessed it meant 'trade price'. 'So how am I supposed to replace the car for that money, given I'm not in the trade?', I asked. 'Erm, you can't, they said'. Bargain.
Funny thing is that if I change the declared value of the car, the premium changes accordingly... duh...?

I had this argument when I totalled my S1. I got pages of adverts, photocopied all the receipts for all the money I had spent on the car and then with a strongly worded letter stated what I was prepared to accept. Stick at it. There is an arbitration process that you can use.
If you want to move things on put pressure on them by saying you will need a hire car unless they agree quickly. If the car is on your property or at a garage say that you will start charging storage on a day by day basis. Did this with Lucky Clover who delayed paying up and in the end magically it was settled in three days after waiting.
Good luck.
PS The book went in the post on Tuesday. First Class.
