I'm just about to go on holiday which will involve a long motorway trip. My car is a tad loud on the motorway after its partial decat and sport exhaust so I want to buy some bolt on silencers which I can remove when I get to the destination.

Can anyone recommend some decent bolt on silencers which do not require drilling holes in the exhaust pipes and remind me where to get them from. Tower View and Merlin Motorsport come to mind. Do the non-drilling, clamp-on ones work successfully without being ejected through some unsuspecting motorists windscreen when you hit 5000rpm.

Thanks,

Ian A.

I have some ACT clamp on ones. Very effective. They stick out the back by some 8 inches. Of course they are only intended for track day use so they are not meant to be beautiful!

I have some Tower View inserts (about £100) which are great and got my 450 chimp sports exhaust into some dba limited tracks.

You do need to drill an 10mm hole in each pipe for a bolt which can be tricky, but does stop them shooting out at 3k rpm and smacking into (for example, but not limited to) the wifes motor.

Infact I got hacked off with the marine diesel noise and took to driving round with them in all the time and changing the wire wool wadding every couple of k miles.

If you get these make sure you bolt them on good and tight. Last week at the Goodwood track day one of the
bolt-on silencers on a Jag vibrated free and ended up a good distance from the track!

I guess those were maybe not on tight, after all there must be less back pressure at the end of the exhaust than at say the main silencer which has the same type of clamp and that never pops off. But you are right, keep it tightly clamped!

I can recommend getting your 'sports' exhaust re packed. Mine was so loud when I bought it that I realised I couldn't live with it on a day to day basis. The sound was great, but it stayed with teh car rather than being left behind and it was too wearing/tiring to drive it any distance.

It also would not have permitted me to do track days...

I can live with it day to day, it's just the odd occasion I do motorway journeys that cause a slight headache. Of course if I could keep it below 3 figures it might help; People just keep getting out of the way for you to go past, it seems discurteous NOT to overtake.

Might not bother and buy the misses some ear plugs.

I picked up some ACT clamp on silencers at the weekend - they're finished in nice, shiney, stainless steel. They seem to knock a good few db's off (not yet measured) and I reckon they look the business - perfectly acceptable for occasional road use (if you really must!).

Cheers
