...it's damned hard work!
I was supporting a charity thing at Castle Combe, taking kids round the track. There were about 40 cars, ranging from a bizarre modded Volvo to a Radical - lots of Ferraris, Caterhams, Porsches, a few Tivs and others.
At the end of the day we got to do a few few fast laps - which was fun. But, I've discovered, it is very hard. Trying to work out when you reach the edge of grip. I must have been doing something right though, because I was being held up by a Ferrari 355.
The best part of the day by far was mid-afternoon when a Ferrari engine let go, flames pouring out the back end - and it pulled over on the grass. I drove up to it, waved the driver over and said: "you should have bought a more reliable car, like a TVR." He smiled and shook his head in embarrasment. I figured that because of all the stick I take for choosing a (perceived) "unreliable marque", then surely I deserve to rub someone else's nose in occasionally. It certainly felt good!

Yes, driving towards the limit on the track is hard work. It takes amazing skill and concentration to put in consistent laps like a good racing driver. I find myself doing well for a few corners, then I fluff a braking point or take slightly the wrong line - it is not easy at all.
BTW, personally I don't think it is very nice to gloat on anyone whose engine has blown up/has crashed. Their car is still their pride and joy whether it is a 2CV or a TVR. Of course, if this driver had been taking the pi55 out of you earlier in the day for driving an unreliable car etc. then fair enough, give him a wink. But I suspect he was upset enough as it was.
