Need a new gearbox

Lost 5th gear totally yesterday, I can engage 5th, but it just jumps out of gear straight away, Making a horrible cruching noise in the process.(Noise similar to engaging reverse gruchhh!!!)

This happen on the motorway,so had to drive 40miles back home in 4th gear.

As I came of the motorway and dropped it into 3rd gear, i got a nasty whining sound from the box.

Whining sound has remained.
Also 1 & 2nd started geting harder to engage, 3rd & 4th remain perfect.


I guess the box is totally knacked now ?

Apparently the (Rover SD 1) fitted on the Pre-serp Chim's are not that good anyways, but I think fitting the later T5 box would involve alot of work/££££.

Is this true?

I need to know where I can purchase re-conditioned / modified Pre-Serp gearbox's, or if possible upgrade to the newer box.

T5 transplant needs different mounts, remote linkage, propshaft and a replacement speedo sensor setup. Budget around £2000 inc gearbox. Getting LT77 box rebuilt and strenghened by Bernie the Gearboxman in Markyate, about £400-500.

I got an LT77S exchange box for £350 with 12months warranty from GEARTECH but they are in the midlands so it may not be much use to you.

Just put it back in, can't wait to try it out .



Getting an LT77 back in is hassle enough, without trying something new !!
