My insurance with Mannings on the Chimaera is due today.

I don't have the paperwork with me but from meory is is in the region of £560 for my 1997 Chimaera 500 with unlimited mileage, full NCB, myself and spouse to drive and Class 1 Business use.

Worth bothering with the hassle of phoning around for a better quote or just go with it?

Considering I've spend as much as £700-odd on insurance for the Chimaera in the past, and given that it is roughly the same as last year (well, in the £500s anyway), maybe I should just phone up and do it.

Give www.swiftinsure.co.uk.

Allows quite a bit of fiddling that most online quotes don't - adding modifications etc

The missus went with Mannings this year. Best price by a country mile. We're now with them for both the Chim and the Box.

Yep, I'm with them for the second year. My renewal was £456 with only 3 yrs NCD and UK & Europe breakdown cover. Didn't think I could beat that anywhere.

The actual renewal quote without all the other gubbins was only £365. I thought that was excellent for 3 yrs NCD.

I'd give Classic line a call 01455 639000
They have just knocked £230 off my A Mannings renewal quote (I've knocked the mileage down to 5000 miles from 7500, but even at 7500 they were £130 cheaper)
They seem to cherrypick the customers so you may not fit into their ideal brackets (I must do ) but it's got to be worth a call

We have the Elan on Classicline and they will not cover it for business use (or indeed any form of commuting).

That's why I didn't even bother contacting them re: the Chimaera.

Turns out the insurance was actually due today, so in typical bloke form I only sorted it out today.

Phoned Mannings, dropped the mileage limit from 7000 miles to 5000 miles and the premium dropped from £593.10 to £497.55, then clarified that I was still getting a discount for IAM (and I wasn't) so that then dropped further to £450.30 - a figure I am more than happy with.

So that's me done on that car for this year.

Corrado is due next month though, so I'll be going through this all over again then.

Don't assume limited mileage is right for your just because you limit your mileage. Sounds I know but almost cost me my car.

I like Mannings, have used them for a couple of years and they've been very helpful and easy to do business with. For me they've worked out the cheapest. I am going to renew again with them in a few days time, so I am not naming and shaming.

But...

I wanted to mention an issue with their limited mileage policy though that nearly caught me out in a bad way. Maybe I am stupid and all limited policies are like this but given the way it happened I bet I am not the only one.

When I renewed last year I asked for limited mileage over the phone, they quoted me a couple of hundred less, I agreed and a few days later the paperwork came through, which I duly filed without reading, in standard bloke mode. I've comfortably done less than the limit (7k).

A couple of months ago I dug it all out ready for renewal and happened to notice that there was an endorsment to the effect that that my car was only covered at night at home if parked in my garage. I don't have a garage or any off road parking, like most houses in my street. I would never have claimed that I did. Effectively my car wasn't insured at night. I called them immediately and they told me that it was a condition of the limited mileage policy that the car was garaged at night. The guy was very reasonable, felt awkward about it like I did, and we sorted it out with a small payment that meant I was properly covered until the next renewal.

Anyway, if you have limited mileage with Mannings or even someone else, check that you don't have to garage your car at night.

If this is unique to Mannings I'd love to know.

It isn't. I've had this on several policies covering "unusual" vehicles.

I'll check that when I get the paperwork. Thanks for the "heads up".

I know that some specialist insurers demand that the car is garaged, which is why we've not used them. The Elan is with ClassicLine who are one of the few classic insurers who are happy for it not to be garaged.

Well, what do you know? 10 days after the policy was set up I get a letter through the door with a new Policy Schedule with the following condition added:

"265A : When your car is at your home or at the address you have agreed with us, you will only be covered for theft or attempted theft between 10pm and 6am if your car is in a locked garage".

This is either a mistake / misunderstanding that should have been clarified at the time of the quote or else it's gaining business under false pretences which I seem to recall is deception and/or fraud and is illegal.

I shall make a polite telephone call tomorrow as their office is only open 9am - 5pm (how 20th Century is that?)

That's what it says on my policy but I explicitly stated that my car would be parked in a garage. Just don't leave it on the road or drive after 10.

i was with mannings for 5 years with a chim, then changed to a tuscan and they were £850 more than anybody else. They said they cant compete with other companies with tuscans, so i went to classic line.

I have no complaints with Mannings at all.

In fact, my recent renewal quote has dropped by £400 since it landed on my doormat!

Don't get me wrong - I have no complaints with them per se, other that the fact that I keep my car on a gated driveway, I have told them so, they know I do, and suddenly I get told that my car isn't actually covered for theft unless I keep it in a garage.

Glad you noticed quicker than I did! I reckon that someone there has his wires crossed, we probably spoke to the same person. I'm sure they'll sort it out on Monday for you but if anyone from Mannings sees this maybe they'd like to remind everyone in the office what they should tell their customers about limited mileage policies.

Presumably this endorsment means that you can't stay away overnight driving your pride and joy? e.g. long weekend, Growl, track day etc. How much fun is that?

I'm sure they will. To be honest, I do think it may be a mistake because the final premium we settled on over the phone was £450. However, the new Schedule that has this exclusion mentions a "revised renewal premium" of £426.30, so I am hoping that the figure I actually agreed on had a £24 additional premium for endorsement 265A to be deleted. Well, that's what I'm hoping anyway and intend to clarify on Monday.

On the contrary, you are fully covered in that eventuality. The exclusion applies only when at your nominated 'home' address.
