I have my chim insured with Tesco for £700 with max no claims. I have an old 205 diesel as a runabout, i cannot get it insured for less than £400 (the car's value!) as my chim is using the no claims.
called sunninghill, as i'd read on a previous thread that they would match the full no-claims, but was told that both cars have to be insured with them. I then asked what the ramifications would be if i signed the 205 over to someone else and drove it on the TVR insurance. His reply was that driving a car not belonging to you was for emergency use only and if you had a personal claim against you, then it would no doubt come out in the wash and invalidate your insurance.
Has anyone else been told this? Its certainly not mentioned in the Tesco smallprint.

So Tesco's won't mirror the NCB on your Peugeot?

Just been through this. The only way round it seems to be to devote your life to calling brokers and insurance companies until you find someone that will reflect your NCB on the second car.

Keep at it - it is worth it in the end (but frustrating at the time). I found companies that will reflect my TVR NCB on a second car and cut my insurance cost by 70%. My tip is to concentrate on brokers, rather than online sites or the large insurance companies directly.

A recommendation: Cheam Insurance Brokers on 020 8770 1001.

Recently bought my company car (I have my NCB on the TVR's policy with Mannings). Called Mannings for an insurance quote for the new car, but they said they only insure TVRs (!). Direct Line honoured my accident-free company driving as 'NCB' providing I could obtain letters confirming that fact from my employers over the last six years....seems reasonable. As my second policy's NCB builds up (hopefully!) it will gradulally become a 'proper' NCB in it's own right.

Try Bell Direct. They've recognised my full NCB and matched it for my second car.

For me they would only do it if both cars were insured through them.

If you need to, you can find others that will reflect the NCB even if the other car is insured with someone else.

I remember an article in Autocar magazine about insuring more than one car with the same insurance company (on the basis that you can only drive one at a time!). Someone recommended the National Farmers Union - apparantly they will cover you for a collection of cars, all on one policy! Probably throw in cover for your tractor, cow etc. as well!
Don't know if NFU could help, but thought I'd suggest it anyway!

Both Sunninghill and Mannings will mirror your NCB that you have elsewhere (i.e. not necessarily through them) on a TVR policy you take out with them.
So you need to transfer the NCB from the TVR(currently Sunninghill) to the Pug. Then go back to Sunninghill or Mannings and say you want to mirror your Pug's full NCB. After 1 year you'll have proof of full NCB on both cars, so no more messing about.
Only problem would be coordinating the timing of all this.
Should work. I'm now the proud owner of 2 sets of full NCB after only 1 year of TVR ownership.

I was in the same situation and phoned a-plan. they were able to offer me a scheme for a 2nd car where they started you off by charging you as though you had 5 years ncb even if you had none and at the end of the year they would give you a cerificate saying that you had 5 years ncb. It was a good price too. I seem to remember the quote was for less than 400 quid and that was for a 205 1.9 gti so you should be laughing with a diesel.

Mark

I insured both my cars through Mannings and they have mirrored the no claims on my main car against the TVR policy. Yes I have had to insure both cars through them but I have been able to get fully comp insure on a BMW 325 and TVR400SE for 800 quid. I don't think that is bad.
I would suggest talking to them as I've found them very helpfull and human.

Thanks for all your replies folks.
Was considering cancelling my Tesco policy and going with A Manning for the chim, got a quote, £610 with 5K mileage restriction. Unfortunately they can only mirror the pug-chim NCB's as far back as my last claim, which was this year, due to an argument with a grassy knoll..
Will take up some of the other advice given.
Any comments on registering pug V5 with friend and driving pug on TVR insurance as in 'the driver may also drive with the owners permission....."
cheers

Ive done it for years, or stick it in under the name of ya Missis, if its only an old clunker and you are not worried about theft insurance ( as for another car its usually third party cover only) its the only affordable way to go IMHO but then I am a tight bas*ard.

bindit - afraid the broker is correct - technically the ability to drive any other car with the owners permission is restricted to emergency uses only amd it is also assuming that other car has a valid insurance policy already in force. I have a 10 year old alfa as my second car, it is a hoot to drive with as it is a 3 litre V6 but the quotes i am getting for the insurance is completely bonkers (costs more than the car's value).

I have also considered transferring the V5 to someone else to benefit from the bonus of driving any other car not owned by me clause but after chats with the brokers, that is not enough and it appears that minimum 3rd party cover is required. Result? it is up for sale in the classified.

I've just phoned National Farmers Union (NFU) Mutual to discuss this.

It would seem that they do not offer a blanket policy as such. What they will do is give you a quote for each car you own, taking into account the NCBs on each car's policy, and then give you an overall figure for insuring them all based on those individual quotes.

Now Cosmic & I have 3 cars with full NCB (one of those was mirrored a year or so ago) and a 4th car that we've just bought (and is currently an additional vehicle on one of the existing policies) with zero NCB.
When I discussed this with the nice lady at NFU she said that they would offer an introductory discount of around 30% on the 4th car, but not full NCB.

So on balance I doubt we'd be that better off than if we tried to get one of our existing NCBs mirrored for the 4th car.

Looks like Portfolio is the only policy on the market that will cover multiple cars on one policy, and until someone has actually had a claim with them then I'm not really ready to go down that route.

Done a bit more digging by doing a Google (UK) search on car insurance "multiple vehicles"

I won't reproduce all the results here - just click on the link above.

call me Mr Cynical, but is NCB mirroring a sales gimmick!? Got two quotes now, both only £20-30 better than if i insure the cars seperately and use zero NCB's on the pug! I can get the pug insured for £150 with 5+ years NCB's, so £360 mirrored sounds a bit dodgy to me!!

I think it depends on the insurer. When I bought the TVR, Cheam gave me full NCB on a new policy due to me having a full NCB on my main car. Their quote also happened to be the cheapest I could get, so I was happy.

Exactly the same for me with Cheam. I'm still with them 3 years on as they still come up with the best price (despite loads of shopping around). Now I have been told that I have my full NCD on both TVR and boring car. No more of that hassle trying to explain to people what mirroring is etc

Sunninghill were significantly cheaper than Cheam for me this year, so like an ungrateful barsteward I jumped ship and gave my business to them instead. Sorry guys.

However, Cheam will probably get my business on insuring the Lotus (which is currently a temporary additional vehicle on an existing policy) if they'll do the mirror trick again for me.
