Was it the Isetta or Meschermitt that had no reverse gear? The engine was 2 stroke, you had to stop the engine, turn the key the other way, which started the engine the other way, then select 1st gear, which as the engine was running the other way (being 2 stroke made no difference) then made the car go astern?

So I guess if it had a 4 speed box, then it had 4 reverse gears as well, unless it was cleverly blocked, dont know though?

The Isetta had no reverse and a single front opening door which had the steering wheel attached! Top tip was NOT to park too close to something or you wouldn't be able to get out!

IIRC the Meschermitt had reverse. It was the car Cousin IT used in the Adams Family.

The messerschmitt has 2 sets of points and a dynastart that lets you spin the engine over in either direction

So yes..... you have 4 gears forward and 4 backwards

It has direct steering (like a go cart) and 9.7 bhp....top speed 65-70 mph on the flat as long as no head wind

I have a permanent grin when driving either the TIV or the SCHMITT

My first car was a Heinkel. You could drive them at sixteen on a motorbike license and I was never into bikes. The same model was built in the UK as a Trojan. It had a 200cc engine that drove the back wheel through a motorbike transmission. Four speed sequential change that sounds quite modern but in fact was a pig actualy to find the gear. The front used to go light at anything over thirty miles an hour. I took my test in it and the examioner was so big, I was squashed up against the side window.
That was all a long time ago now, aahh memories.

I've got to admit that I've always fancied a bubble car, especially a Messerschmitt. This is no great revelation to people who know me, because I've always been into "anything but ordinary".
I'm sure most of you are the same, why else would you buy a TVR, when you could get a mass produced, totally reliable, run of the mill "normal persons" car.

I like to think it is because I've got individual tastes, I suspect my long suffering wife thinks that it's just one step nearer to the straight jacket and padded cell

I own a 1956 Isetta, and I can say they're awesome little cars. Also, I don't know of any isetta that doesn't have a reverse- (though I'm not sure about the 3 wheeled British ones...) but all the others definently had reverse. Besides, if you parked too close to a wall with no reverse, you could just climb out the sunroof!

My car is a 1956 BMW Isetta 300 U.S. export (I live in MD in the U.S.), however, it is an early model with the bubblewindow windows. It also has the rare Z trim only offered in 1956. I have pics on my website, nickdrummond.tripod.com (no "www".

Its so fun to putter along on 1 cylinder and watch people's reactions. Its "mighty" 13 hp can even get it up to 53 mph! 60 goin down a hill with a good tailwind!

Yeah this topic is 5 years old ... eh, so ?

Well I'm not quite a TVR and bubblecar owner, yet I've always loved TVRs and certainly plan of getting one at some point in my life. I'm a (sensibly driving) 20 year old student at the moment so that might still be a few years

I do however have a bubblecar - a Messerschmitt KR200 cabriolet, it's great fun to drive ! My normal everyday car may be better made, more efficient, faster and more practical... but the Messerschmitt is definitely more fun.
