Having read various threads on this site refering to corroding chassis's, I thought it a good time to have a close inspection of the V8S.

Now ideally it would require a body off complete restoration of the chassis, but, lets be realistic, I have neither the time nor the money to do this. The chassis has been checked professionally twice in the past 2 years and both stated there were no problems and all was sound, however as it does require waxoiling (spelling). So I thought, perhaps I should get some quotes to rub down and paint all visible parts of the chassis before treatment. Does anybody have any ideas how much this would cost and if it's worth it?

Any comments appreciated

Why would you want to pay for this - get it up on ramps for a week in a warm garage with music and all the right tools - fun - what I plan to do...

I too wish to clean and waxoyl the chasis, etc. What's the safest way to jack it up at home in the garage to get underneath and leave it like that for a few weeks whilst I do the work. Are there ramps that can be purchased that are safe for home use and will fit in a garage?

Some would say that its best to take your TVR off the road and Waxoil your chassis etc during the winter months away from that corrosive salt.... Think though .. Waxoil repells water.. it also will keep wayer in.
Would you not be bettter off doing this work in the summer when the chassis is dry and the
air is also dryer ? you could end up trapping moisture on your chassis and actually worsening the rust. I took 3 days in the height of summer to do mine .. drilled about 6 small holes and blew hot waxoil with thinners mixed in down all the chassis tubes and left them to dry. .

My tame mechanic said it was best to wait until spring, too. He also offered me the use of the (outside) ramp at his premises, which make access easier. He charged £250 to clean, wire brush and Waxoyl another customer's Griff - said it took a day...

My local garage (for my non-TVR cars) is going to wire brush, Hammerite where necessary, and Waxoyl my chassis next week - estimate 2.5hrs = £90. Apparently he does the same for Rolls Royces that need the same chassis care. Better than 1/2 a day on the drive with ramps and goggles!

Never heard of anyone doing that before, sounds like your making work for yourself now you,ve made a hole in the chassis allsorts of dampness can get around in the chassis that in the telescopic extension wont reach.:knowtheprosproberlydothis:

Agree with doing it before winter, done mine, used a wire brush in a battery drill to get rid of any loose paint an rust, cleaned,Hammerited and Waxoyled, out in rain and salt

Better hurry up and get it done then...if they charge 90 quid for 2.5 hours labour, some Hammerite and 2.5 litres of Waxoyl they'll be out of business before the first salt hits the road!! Or they'll put it up on the ramp, spray a bit of waxy stuff where you'll see it and tell you they're so good they do it on R-R's.....while you reach for your folding! If it's worth doing, it's worth doing properly. Do it yourself and you'll get the stuff into all the crooks and nannys.

Hutch, well pulled-up! - but, yes materials are on top and this guy is well known to me having looked after my family's cars for 9 years - he's the unusual and dying breed of family garages you can trust and would actually recommend!

Found this browsing around, as you do....

I had the garage do mine initially as it's a messy old job to rub down and waxoyl. I also had them drill the chassis at the lowest points so that any built up condensate can drain easily during cold weather.

I've since re-applied the waxoyl concentrating on the outriggers.

I also noticed that my V6S body has had holes drilled next to the outriggers in each sill so that a tube can be poked through to waxoyl the areas of each area on top of the outrigger that can't be reached from underneath.

Peninsular cleaned and re waxoyled my chassis last year for £80+vat. I think it may have been a deal, and I did spend a good wad on a major service at the same time, but everywhere I've looked, the chassis is thick and gooey.

As has already been said, I'd rather pay £94 than climb under the car with scrapers and goggles for a day. My car's previous owner did it himself, and confesses that in all his years on this earth, he hasn't found a dirtier job.

Anyone know anywhere in Yorkshire where I can get the chassis cleaned and waxoiled?

If it doesn't cost much over £100 I would consider it a good selling point for the car and then can honestly say it needs absolutely nothing doing.

You could try Tom at TJ Motors in Boroughbridge (01423 326575). I will be asking him to do mine in the next month.
