TVR's and horses
Discussion
How do you go about letting horses past with the noisy beasts?
Was coming home the other day in the cerb, and there was a horse on our road. Now its a single track road and the horse was looking extremely nervous coming towards the car. So thinking it might save the body work having hoof prints in I turned the engine off. Horse went past ok, but gave me the evil eye as it went. Rider said thankyou and all was fine.
Horse was about 100yards away from the car, and thought it safe to start cerbie up. Started the engine, yep you guessed it, horse tucked its tail under its ar**e and took off like Shergar
Thankfully the rider didn't fall off.
But it got me thinking, how far past am I going to have to let horses go before I can get going again?

I was thinking about this just the other day when on my bike; eased off, gave a couple of friendly shouts, moved into the right hand gutter (nothing coming of course) and crept past. The horse still went beserk
As I moved on a Mitsi Shogun/Warrior/Jedi thing steamed past the troubled rider (now on grass) and myself without lifting off at all. :fukckingbigrolleyes:
Then I thought, if I was in the wedge, I'd just have to sit there, gurgling gently until she passed, regardless of what others are doing behind.

Lots of horses round here.
My trick is to leave it in 2nd gear and creep by, the benefit of this is if the horse throws a wobbler you can't plant it and get away.
Difficult in your situation though as you weren't really passing it and it was already having a fit. There was probably little you could do in this situation.

I do my best to be considerate - lift off, burble past, don't take off until well down the road. Generally found most horses/riders to be fine and courteous in return. Some will ALWAYS go bananas, but that's the point I tend to think "well, f@*% you, I did my best, and we're both road users, aren't we!"
Best thing is as above - let the engine just tick over and if you have the radio on - turn it down (they are on quite loud in TVRs due to the exhaust!) Most horses are fine with cars, engines on etc...even TVRs.
Mrs events horses don't mind the TVRs it is the tractors that they aren't too keen on.

My Mrs rides horses and she told me that they don't like things slightly tucked away. Best to stay on the road and stop if its particularly narrow, dip the clutch and let the rider sort the rest out.
If the horse is having a hizzy fit then any sensible rider should dismount and get out the way or maybe walk the horse by.

Dipping the clutch works well. Bare in mind that different horses, like people, are terrified of different things. My wife's was terrified of tractors, whilst a horse she had a few years ago was bullet proof around motor vehicles but would go absolutely harpic if it saw a butterfly!!!

I think you were more than considerate - my guess is the horse owner was trying to get the animal used to traffic.
My dog used to be petrified of traffic - especially big lorries .. so rather than plan his walk to avoid the traffic : I made it part of his regular walk. They get used to it

Makes you wonder what they do when a blinkin tractor goes past though.
Or when they're tailgated by a white van man!
Horses are funny creatures though - they can be spooked by a random leaf blowing around.
As other posters have said, it's best to be as considerate as possible to horse/rider and exercise caution as the situation dictates.
So I couldn't have done anymore. I have seen this horse and rider before, I think its a young horse, cos it didn't particularly like the voyager but it didn't throw a hissy fit like it did at the cerb. But I think the cerb is quite loud, and it still has its cats on. We have alot of horses that ride around here should make the summer interesting.
My son rides and has done since he was 3. The lady who owns the stable has asked us not to take the cerb into the yard as she's worried half of the horses could bolt. Which is fair enough, and I had already told my husband to use the voyager when going to the stables.
I do try to be considerate, because I would like to think others will be when my son is riding.
