I returned from a week away to find my T350 exhaust was much louder than I remembered, and it’s a TVR Power sports exhaust so it's already loud. Driving the car over the next few days it was getting rougher and rougher, it didn’t pick-up very well, it was becoming a pig to drive in traffic and idled like a 1970’s double-decker bus.
Having just blown-up my V12 Jag earlier in the week, I wasn’t ready to have another car die on me (anyone want to buy a boiled Jag?).
I was trying to think what might have changed, the only thing I could think of was that I had filled the car with petrol before I garaged it. A bit of investigation suggested that although it was unlikely to have water in the petrol, if the garage I had filled-up at has a low turnover the petrol could have deteriorated. Clutching at straws, I added 34 litres of Tesco 99 Octane rated super unleaded to the 21 litres of Optimax left in the car. By the time I got home, the exhaust volume was back down to very-loud, the car picked-up much better and the idle was back to normal.
From experience; take care where you buy your petrol - use a filling station that has a high petrol turnover.

I've always found that running 95 octane makes my car noticeably louder, not sure whether the octane drops over time, but if the fuel was iffy and then you left it, that could be why...
