Not to have a front number plate?

Mine 'came off' a week or so ago and I have not really got around to putting it back on yet, its just sitting on my back parcel shelf. I only ask as i'm an aussie with no idea about English law and also when pottering around Wimbledon, clapham and the city last weekend I passed countless plod without a second look.

But ironically it's only a £30 fine, whereas a Truvelo will sting you for £60 and three points if you're speeding

I've always figured if I got caught with my 3/4 plate I'd go for the "sorry officer but it tends to overheat" plea and see if that works.

I ran without one for a year, when stopped they gave me the ticket to get it put right within 7 days. And also informed that they would be informing dvla about it.

They also pointed out that I am "borrowing" the VRM from DVLA & that they have the right to relieve me of it, if I continue to mis use it

As I understand it, the way the law stands at the moment it's a £30 fine and 0 points for no number plate, or £60+ and 3+ points for speeding etc. Apparently, if you carry the plate in the car you can always say that it just fell off and you were going to fix it back on later.

The problems occur after you've been stopped for not having a plate once. A second or subsequent offence tends to look like you're taking the piss.

Personally I can't be arsed to take the plate off and make my car(s) a more likely target to get stopped by the BiBs. Knowing my luck they'd let me off with the plate, but find something a lot worse to nick me for

I've been pulled over twice now for ilegal plates, the second time was just after passing a porker that had just been pulled by the old bill and smirking...the bar steward must have floored it for the best part of a mile to catch me to pull me over. And yes, the porker returned the favour shortly after pulling over.

I now keep a set of road legal plates in the boot for this occasion.
"Sorry officer I was at a classic car rally the other day forgot to swap the plates over" works for me :-)

I know, I know... And they are nice new plates aswell. I will pop in on Sat morning and let you guys work your magic (It has snapped off at the screw holes so will most likely need a new plate holder??). Also need to get the book stamped aswell

Can anybody help me with the type of rear plates for the cerebera. I have had some made but they are the wrong type???. I need to have transparent ones because of the rear lights. What are they called and where do i get them from...Halfwits???

I got mine from fancyplates.com/co.uk, I think IIRC theres an option for TVR plates on one of the drop down menus.

They also do TVR logos on your plate and that sort of thing if you're into that.

When I ordered mine from Fancyplates there was a "comments" section, I told them it was for a Cerbera it needed to let the light pass through.


I've just had the paperwork come through for a new plate on our work's van, and the max penalty for in correct use / missing plates is £1000. If you're a persistent offender they reserve the right to withdraw the plate without compensation.
