Selling privately or through a dealer ?
Discussion
Hi all,
Maybe a slightly obvious question but I was curios to know the bigger picture. Selling privately, I will obviously get a better return as there are no 3rd parties involved. I was interested to know how much of the realistic private asking price a dealer is going to knock me down before they agree to sell. or, maybe it doesn't work like this and the dealer takes a percentage. Can anyone give me a better inside track as to whether or not it is better to sell though a dealer or not - etc blah blah blah..
Thanks

Unless your dad's called Tom I would certainly try to sell privately first. The market is flat at this time of year and residuals low - even on a lowish (£10-£15k) value car the dealer needs £2k differential to 'put things right and make a profit' before you start. Having said that if you are part ex ing (trading up) you may get a good deal via a dealer.
Try advertising on PH for free at a realistic price first. Good luck, Paul.

OMG - that is almost half the price I have put the car on the mkt for. So in short - I am better putting the price down a bit on a private sale to make it more attractive and not entertaining dealers. Or do the dealers tinker about with it a bit and then sell it at a much higher price than I am going to be able to get privately. (First time I have sold if it is not completely obvious so sorry if the questions are dumb)

I sold my Audi on PH within 24 hours of the advert going up. I know its not a TVR and yes it was keenly priced, but worth a shot. FYI, I got £3500 more for it than an Audi dealer offered me for a trade-in. The robbing bar stewards

Yup - Not the best time of year for TVR buying though I guess. Already on PH and 12 days, not a blip so lowered the price today (getting ready to take my pants down). Is part exchange a gd option as i want to buy a gold in replacement but of less value. any thoughts.
Eh?
That makes no sense!
97 P 4.0L Chim?
Too lazy to look up your ad, but with power steering, and 30/50k miles I would say you Chim is worth about £10k tops. Less if you want to get shot quick.

Yup - just read it again myself - doh. Not being too educated on seeling TVR's, I have been advised by a few very TVR educated others that I am already offering at a great price for the vehicle in question. Anyway - the bit that made less sense was the Gold - It was supposed to say VW Golf which i guess i am hoping to pick up (part ex) for about 6K so I make some cash for the new business but i can't see this happening through a dealer..
To be bluntly honest - if you need to raise the cash for whatever reason it doesn't really make sense to have your pants pulled down on your Chim and then invest most of it in a £6K Golf which will shed another few K in the next year or two before you inevitably step up to a TVR or something erm, more interesting than a Golf at least. Run/of/the/mill cars will keep on losing their value until there´s none left, where I don´t see Chimaeras getting that much cheaper before prices start to sabilise and even pick up again.
If you need to drive a regular, non-petrolhead car for awhile (as opposed to selling because you feel you've done the sports car thing, had your fun, got it out of your system and just want to 'move on'), get a cheap one and save the cash for when that moment comes (I don't suppose you're setting up your business venture because you have the ambition to keep driving 'sensible' cars for the rest of your life
).

Link to your ad?
Or if the mods permit how much you selling your Chim for?
I guess a link the mods might have an issue with but I have put it on for £11,500 which is less than i was suggested. Cars are like houses, there is some real dross out there being sold for good prices and cars that sound better than mine for less - just seems to be no balance.
I amnot going to completely drop my pants - I just wanted to get value for money rather than selling as a last resort - a gof is just one of many options but i need to be able to tow as well and it would become a company car. hmmm
With very little income whist setting up the new business, 4k would be a gift right now - certianly pay the rent for the last 5 months I haven't paid the landlord. And really it is the 5 door and tow bar that I need - but you are right - it seems a shame/waste to let a lovely car go, replace it with a standard golf, all to get a small bit of cash in hand.
Fernies also have same spec cars as mine but just 1 yr younger on at 15K - I can't believe 1 year in age devalues a car by a third of its price - or can it...

No.
But Fernies have to pay to maintain their premises, pay salaries and make a profit.
They also have to take a p/ex most probably.
I think your car is about right if you are prepared to wait, but for a quick sale you are going to need to be cheaper.
Just my opinion, mind. I had nothing from PH when I advertised my Chim - and it was cheap. Ending up P/exing it for the Cerb for more allowance than I was asking on here.
