Bloody speed bumps..
Discussion
As if it wasn't bad enough that work want me to dump my beloved S for a box with a wheel at each corner, (after 48 hours of ownership), they've gone and put speed bumps in the car park. I swear I was doing 2mph over each one and still heard unpleasant grinding noises..
How can I give everyone the benefit of my exhaust note when I'm restricted to that speed?

Always were bumps, but I think they had some spare tarmac from resurfacing and thought they would use it up. Clearance on mine is pretty good, (exhaust specially made); not managed to ground it anywhere else yet..
Speed bumps totally unecessary there anyway as its always double parked and you need to weave between cars parked half in the bays, half on the pavement etc etc.
OTOH, maybe I can see whey they felt they needed humps..

I can sympathise with you, I also have an S and they have just put speed ramps all the way down the road where I work (I work in Oxford on the industrial estate where that bloke dug one up with a JCB and was arrested if you saw it on the news!), there is no way I can drive to work in the S now without ripping £400 worth of exhaust off!

I have wired a thick aluminium plate on the low center box of my wedge. I seems to protect the exhaust as I have a couple of nasty lapses when I hit speed bumps quite hard. On one occasion it virtually ripped of the plate - but there was no damage whatsoever to my nice newish stainless system.

May be more hassle than it is worth, but the speed ramps have strict legal sizes that they have to adhere to. If they are not, drive the car over them, destroy the exhaust, sue the council. If everyone who owned sports cars that grounded did this maybe we would get some sense in the placement of these damn things.
i start sweating (or is that swearing
) every time I round a corner and see one. I sympathise with any of you (especially with S's) that have them on your route to work or home. I dont know what I would do in those circumstances. I wonder whether the government are even aware that some cars cannot drive over these humps without hitting them? not that they would give a f

kI successfully sued Macclesfield Council for a new exhaust on my old S2. The speed humps were far too high and they damaged the exhaust. The bumps were on the road that I lived on, and so there was nothing that I could do to avoid them. I even took the extreme action of slowing down, and that didn't work.
Issue in the small claims court, measure the speed humps, get as many details as you can of other standard production cars with very low ground clearance that would all ground out on the same hump. That way you can show that it is not just you, but a significant number of people who drive "normal" off the shelf cars, not modified Nova's.
More people need to take action against Councils. You have paid your road tax, we pay more tax on petrol that most other UK residents (we use more after all!)yet a significant pecentage of our nations roads are not available to us because of the bloody speed humps they put on them.

Not had my S very long... but already dread speed bumps... scraped the exhaust a couple of times (VERY slowly) and seem to have got away with it so far (touch wood).
Found that a diagonal appraoch can sometimes help... otherwise, front wheels on the bump. Stop. Easy down on the brakes, then crawl forward... until you're away!
Seems that each type of speed bump has it's own technique...

South Tyneside council has wisely thought up a way of implementing the "safe routes to school" proposal.
Stick dozens of speed humps around two schools, either end of my village. I wouldn't have known about their arrival had it not been for a bit of white A4 paper selotaped to a telegraph post, so I have promptly wrote in to complain, explaining my cars ride height would mean having to negotiate these humps at a speed much lower than that of normal cars, so risking my safety as well as risking damage to my car.
I don't know how far one persons objection will carry, as I'm sure people that normally use these roads will not be aware of the humps, as they don't walk past the pole to see the notice.
If you use a road past a school, slow down and lookout for white A4 notices. They may be heading for a school near you.

Byff - that reminds me of a situation i found myself in a few months ago. I was driving on a fairly familiar stretch of road when, without any warning at all, I saw a mini-roundabout appear immediately in front of me. It was one of the sort of painted on ones but still raised 3 -4 inches. Sh*t myself with the ground clearance in the S but luckily was only travelling about 30 so had reduced speed to 20ish when hit it straight on. No joke, I think the car jumped over the thing cos the exhaust didnt scrape at all, whereas it usually does to drive up a dropped kirbstone, let alone this!
No warning signs of the change of layout at all. Had driven it 2 weeks previous and it wasnt there. Like there isnt enough speed humps to f
k up my exhaust.

My S was a total nigtmare as I had lowered the ride height aswell ! Only thing that made it any better was having stiffer springs ...
It would even ground out like a see saw on those black and yellow plastic ones you get in car parks !
It was so low that when I visited the hallowed halls of head office I parked in the 'posh' gravelly bit round the back and got repeated notes about the fact I shouldn't be using this. Next time I went I left a note explaining that I very nearly got stuck in the staff car park as the only speed bump was on the way out of the car park and was Everests smaller cousin !!
Simple answer is ..... buy a Griffith

The First Expense/experience was when i went through a drive through Maccy D's in my then recently acquired S3.
That Big Mac meal cost me a grand total of £400 as i wrecked the exhaust on leaving the drive through to quickly and catching it on a spped bump.well at least it souded like a VEE8 for a while

The worst speed hump I've come across is in the entrance to the car park of Calor's offices in Leamington Spa. Not only is it huge, but it's made of rough cobble stones so there're lots of edges to catch on. I have to park on the road when I'm there as it acts as a total barrier to the car park for me.
And those big rubber ones that Johno mentioned are a b*gger too. You crawl over them, just waiting for the centre box to wedge on top...

Lots of examples of problems, but can anyone tell me the maximimum sizes of speed bumps, or where I can get them. My local council have built 2 different styles either end of the local village where my parents and in laws live, so now can't visit either in the S2 without scraping the exhaust. I want to take them to task over them.

I saw a killer speed hump yesterday. The Fire Brigade were pumping water from a main to a blaze about a quarter of a mile away (South Harrow). The large pipes were protected my a steep (about 45 degrees) and tall (about 8-10in) plastic sleeping
. I had serious doubts about driving a Focus over it.
Any S still on it's original spring/dampers is going to be sagging by now. Just don't be tempted to go too low.
