I got the gist of this. If nobody on PH has an address you could contact the mag and give them an assurance (maybe in writing) that any info would only be used for legal proceedings. If they quote data protection to you then write to them and finally you may have to send them a solicitors letter. However, I don't think data protection applies to information held in a card file or on notepaper for instance. The best bet would be to attend the magazine in person and somebody may help you on a personal level if you get my drift! The info you need may be written in a notepad which could be shown to you. Softly, softly catchee monkey. Mike

I think they revised the Data Protection law in 1998 to cover any information held i.e Computer or paper, the original 1984 act covered mainly information stored on Computer.

Yep, now applies to any "relevant filing system", (barely) defined as:

"relevant filing system" means any set of information relating to individuals to the extent that, although the information is not processed by means of equipment operating automatically in response to instructions given for that purpose, the set is structured, either by reference to individuals or by reference to criteria relating to individuals, in such a way that specific information relating to a particular individual is readily accessible.

There are certain transitional provisions though. I think these relate to data held in manual form before a certain date.

How sad are we?!

That's interesting John. So Griffert will need some luck and maybe a bunch of flowers when he goes asking that young secretary to look through her notepads! Failing that and depending on what went wrong he could involve the constabulary.

He's right. Data Protection Act 1998 applies to manual (such as card files) databases...
