I have finally finished putting the new style (VW Corrado) door mirrors on my Griff. I'm really pleased with how they look and am just putting the finishing touches to a comprehensive 'how to' guide for anyone who is interested in doing the same thing.

The conversion is possible for any Griff or Chimaera - although the earlier the car, the more likely it is you will have to bugger about with the wiring.

Using secondhand mirrors and getting professionals to paint them, cost is about £200.

Whilst I am sorting out what to do with the guide, here is a pic:

Sorry about the 'dust' on the car - it is in fact crap on the camera lens....

The look really nice, but big! Is that just the camera perspective?

Yes it is the camera. I really need to take a couple of shots of the full car outside the garage. 2 problems with this:

1) I haven't been at home in daylight since I finished them and won't be until the weekend

2) the car is still sitting on axle stands

I jacked it up the week before Christams to waxoyl the chassis and it has not touched the ground since. I did treat it to running the engine for 15 minutes last night, then popped it through the gears until I was doing 70mph, sitting in the garage.

I was looking forward to getting the car out and driving it again asap, but must admit after reading about poor Harrigan's tragic death and Ballistic Banana's write off, I had rather less enthusiasm.

Will post better pics at the weekend. Ted has agreed to host the guide so you'll see it here soon...

Brilliant!!

I assume the ECU/wiring worked out OK.

Can't wait for the guide as I would like to change the mirrors on my Chimp - as mentioned on other threads, they scratch the door tops (only when the cover is on and when it's windy the cover pulls the mirrors in)

Well impressed. You did a gr8 job Giff2be.

PS. Amazing how the dust on the lens is only in the region where the car is in the pic - nowhere else

Here are a couple more pics:

First, Grump in his jym-jams (still on the axle stands and with his tube heater tucked underneath to keep him warm....):

Then some more mirror shots:

Gulp, and I thought my TVR was spoilt! Looks like Grump's teddy bear may have fallen off the side of the bed when you took the first picture.

Hi KDNGRIFF,

I'm not far from you then, I live in Goring Heath.

Anyway, the tube heater came from www.tubeheat.co.uk/tubeheat.html

It's too small to heat the whole garage, but I wanted it to keep a small amount of heat rising up through the engine bay.

Regards

Andy

Just took a quick look at the site, it says they heat up to 150 deg C on the surface, that right? Sounds bloody hot should you accidentaly touch it? Rich...

It is a bit painful, but you soon let go! Its not that hot - 150 deg C is pretty low for, say, and oven.

They do supply protective wire guards to go over them, but I couldn't be bothered as I keep it under the car when its on.

I drag it out by its cable when I drive the car and then grab it with an old towel in my hand.

If I'm feeling really keen I might mount mine on a piece of wood and attach a handle to the base. But that's job number 354 on a list of 500 things to do....

the mirrors look good. roll on the w/e for the long shots. particularly like the fit to the door - that'll make waxing the car easier as well!
highly jealous of that garage.

Me to!! I feel guitly mines not kept in a garage since i bought it (previous owner had a lush garage). I feel like I'm letting the car down somehow!! I do keep it well clean and polished, and sometimes crack out the car cover, but it's still no garage replacement!! The car hasn't complained yet though, and it does get used very regularly so it won't waste away!

BTW, the wing mirrors look the business - good job!
