TVR on Prime Minister's Question Time

Just caught PM's Questions on Sky, and who I have to presume is the local MP gets a question out on TVR and the Blackpool lay-offs. Unfortunately, this was on a big-screen TV in an eatery, so I didn't catch the full gist or hear Tony's response. They say all publicity is good publicity, but I think questions in the House are stretching it a bit far...

Quite possible. But one good thing that has come from all this, all the people who i know which keep asking me what a TVR is all know who they are now...
Only drawback is that they must think i live in a cloud as they all say "Thought id best let you know, TVR are laying off staff etc."

Sounds about right for a typical Government response to the decline of manufacturing in the UK. Never mind - go work in a call centre! And I don't have any political bias here, it's been the same for decades. Manufacturing accounts for 16% of the GDP. We've never had an engineer as PM by the way.

The Prime Minister: I can certainly give my hon. Friend that assurance, and I am obviously sorry for those of her constituents who face the prospect of redundancy. She will know that there is now a well tried and tested procedure for dealing with situations where manufacturing or other redundancies arise as a result of changes in the market. We will make sure that the full infrastructure of support from Jobcentre Plus and the DTI is put in place to try to help her constituents. It is fortunate that our very strong economy and the number of jobs available in it mean that we have been able to provide extra jobs when similar redundancies have occurred. In addition, I assure my hon. Friend that we would be happy also to provide the necessary re-skilling and retraining for her constituents.

Does he mean the dole ? But not for six months and then only for six months ? Then you get to work at B&Q or a call centre

Sadly this and the prievious bunch seem to think wealth is made by regurgitating money and taking their percentage. Great for the odd individual creaming it off, bugger all use in actually generating wealth.
Need to go to Germany or Japan to be truely appreciate as an engineer I'm affraid
. At these points I'm always reminded of Shirley Williams on Question Time during the 80's, stating its was obscene that a 25 year old could earn 4-5 times as much in a year as a 30+ year experienced engineer by gambling with other peoples money
. The only time I've actually agreed with anyone from old or new Labour mind . I've spent a lot of time helping with a major export manufacturing deal (still subject to signature etc), a very rare thing now days for GB Plc and I will get my salary and be thankfull its not my P45

So to summarise: Because the economy is "so strong", unfortunately not in the manufacturing sector though, Tony is in a position to help place all workforce in similar jobs? oh I see by the use of, wait for it "Job Centre Plus", that will be the new improved rebranded job centre!
Notice there is absolutely no mention of any attempt to help TVR remain in Blackpool, which is what the lady was asking for.
