a friend of the family recently went away on holiday. while she was away her son had a party, running out of beer he decided to take his mums car (without permission) to the shop to pick up some more. taking the scenic route home with a friend in the car, he proceeded to loose control of the megan coupe @ about 120 mph round a bend, roll it end 2 end and over and over then tried to mate with a lamp post. the said child then climbed out of the sunroof, ran away and hid from the police for 3 days. This is without a liscence, hence no insurance and all the other related crimes.
the lad goes to court over the incodent 2 months later now having passed his test and recieved his lisence.
what would you expect for such a bunch of crimes? driving with no lisence, insurance, dangerous driving, theft, criminal damage, resisting arrest, and many others that im sure could be added.
a 28 day driving ban and a £350 fine? that'll teach him.

They'll probably send him on a track day and let him drive lots of fast cars as a treat (or may be that's just Derbyshire)
Having said that he probably got off lightly because no one could think of anything better to do with a Megane Coupe

Not sure what to suggest.. When I was doing the accident investigation work a while ago a young lad that had nicked a car belonging to his folks was frog marched around some of the more gruesome wrecks by a traffic cop - relative I think.. Apart from looking white as a sheet and hanging head in shame etc, not sure of the long term effects.
Parents car ? - They're highly unlikely to press the theft or in this case taking a vehicle without consent, are they...
How old is the 'kid' ?
120mph in a Megane ? Really....
If you beleive the facts as stated in this case, then there is no reason for the 'kid' to have been punished further. Did he hurt anyone...no, did anyone witness his 'dangerous driving'...seems not, and if all he did was to mash up a Renault then the punishment seems justified in its apparent leniency
edited to say... Oh and nearly forgot, hiding is not specifically in the Statute book yet.... unlike number plate offences.... grrr.... aarghh ....book em.....book em all!!...

In California, he'd have been looking at jail time and depending on his age, he might not have been able to drive legally for many years.
Driving while intoxicated? Drinking under age (if he was under 21)? Driving without a license? Driving without insurance? Reckless endangerment, Leaving the scene of an accident without notifying the police?
Any one of these things would land someone in serious trouble with the cops.
Without knowing the specifics, I'd say he'd be looking at being convicted of multiple felonies. Perhaps a $2,500 fine, if this was his first brush with the law, he might get either a suspended sentence or house-arrest and lengthy probation (~5 years) and probably get some sort of arrangement with the courts where if he stayed out of trouble for the duration of the probation, he could ask to have his record expunged at the end of that time.
If he had an existing criminal record, perhaps a 12-18 month custodial sentence and with an option for release after six months with good behavior.
Oh yeah, and if he was my kid, he'd been working to pay off the car... with interest.
