Now, I know it's unusual for the words 'TVR' and 'breakdown' to appear in the same sentence but ...

I've been covered by the RAC for the last 18 years and on the whole have had good service from them. Having owned a number of old and/or temperamental cars I've used them regularly!

As a result of:

(a) steadily increasing subscription (£104 pa for Home, Rescue and Recovery on any car I drive or am passenger of), and

(b) seeing a recent documentary about the RAC scam to sell batteries to broken down motorists who don't need them,

I'm thinking about alternative cover.

Do any of you who have used a breakdown service company on a regular basis have any recommendations based on the service you've had? What sort of annual subscription are you charged?

Thats if I've got it right..

Didn't get any in the end myself, but will be doing so soon..

Thanks. I missed this one as it was over the Christmas period. Having looked through the posts on that thread, I'd still be keen to hear from happy members who have used their cover regularly for TVRs or similar cars.

I got completely nailed by the AA last year. My car is very sound but wanted peace of mind Euro cover for the blat to Le Mans. The ex grease monkey sales Kevin on the Charlton industrial estate, South London told me to sign up to the 200 programme which gave me ( as an added benefit 3 days euro cover) and then all I needed to do was to top up the days by one day as I always go for 4. I phoned the AA , after paying my £90 for the cover, and asked for the price for the top up to which the reply was that it was actually a totally seperate cover that had to be purchased on top of what I already had. It cost me another 40 quid. I have never, touch wood, had to call on their services but do somewhat doubt that when you pick up the phone and say " my cerbie's not working" that they would do anything other than hitch it up and take you home!

I use footman James for classic Insurance and it includes breakdown recovery . . . .although when I had a blow out on the M23 on Friday night it turned out quicker and easier to get a lift home (3 hour wait for a special 'sports car' trailer
) and sort it out myself . . . .

as for home start, the RAC/AA man wont know the car as well as me, so thats a waste of time!

Don't bin your AA cover just yet , if your car is under ten years old you can for an extra £40 you can add a warranty, The way it works is that if your vehicle breaks down at the roadside and the AA can't sort it they will pay up to £500 of the repair costs! and once yo have the cover as long as you keep the car they will continue to cover it even when it's over 10 years old.
