How long to change a windscreen?

Need to get a new windscreen (hot sun + cold water = trouble), it's covered by the insurance but only if done by RAC Windscreens, who reckon they need the car for a whole day (even 4 hours on a saturday apparently not enough). Now maybe the sealant takes time to cure, but is that really how long it takes? Or when I drop it off am I likely to see them with picnic hamper at the ready?

It's a real pain, since they're only open 8.30 - 5pm and I'm at work 8 - 6.

Yep 6 - 8 hrs usaully the minimum had mine done 2 years ago at the local Mobile Windscreen depot and as its very local I could drop in to see how progress went and due to the sealants requiring sufficient cure time - all day was only option!

They had my S for about 5 or 6 hours... job they did was better than the factory effort too...

It does take quite a while depending on how much of a perfectionist the fitter is. It also takes quite a while removing the old screen and the old sealant to a good standard. The sealant should ideally be left for 24 hours to cure but obviously this isn't always practical.

Ah ok, doesn't sound so daft then after all. How does it work with their mobile service then? Obviously they can't send a van out all day for one job, so do they do part of it and then scoot off to another job and come back later? Or is the mobile service more for emergency roadside repairs, to be done properly at the workshop? (plus stone chips, which they do with the mobile service too)

i think the mobile service is for the cars that can be done, mobile... whereas tvr's and the like would be a back to base job

Recently had one done, car with them all day, as to the RAC issue this was same with my insurers, but they allowed me to go elsewhere, I paid the bill and claimed it back from insurers, had the cheque back in 7 days. Had it done by autoglass, have had no problems with fitting or standard of work.

Taking the Cerb to Autoglass on Weds for a new windscreen. They want it all day too, I had your worry that they would be off out in it for the day, but my Indie has used them before and he says they're good and need the car to sit so the sealants dry properly.
