More Goodwood FOS

Hi All,

Was at Goodwood FOS yesterday.. Firstly (and probably should be on the Jaguar board) a big thankyou to Jaguar for their hospitality. Certainly added a very nice touch to proceedings.

Secondly and most importantly i was very disappointed not to see a TVR stand there. Considering the whole event shouts British motoring heritage (yes many other countries too) and also it is a true Car enthusiasts day..

I would say that TVR's key market are the kind of people walking around Goodwood..

I'm a true TVR supporter but i do believe they missed a good thing with the FOS.

The factory themselves dont seem too interested in events like Goodwood - untill recently the local TVRCC had a stand there, but I think Im right in saying its too expensive, & one hell of a lot of work for a small group of volounteers to arrange, which is a shame. (but please feel free to correct me if Im wrong)

I agree that for a Car Club like the TVRCC it would be a huge expense but for the Factory, considering recent press (Good & Bad), it would be money well spent.

They should at least have had a TVR or two go up the hill. I remember the orange Sagaris go up the hill in 2004. In fact I'll never forget it - a very hairy, smoky drive by tuscan racer Phil Keen. Lots of noise and wheelspin and the car looked very quick.

At least the GP masters will have a big TVR presence. The plan is for all the drivers to be paraded round in tuscan convertibles. A great idea that makes me wish I'd bought one. Imagine Emmo or Nige pointing out the braking and turn-in points over your shoulder!

I for one am going to the GP masters, it should be great.

I was at the interview with Nigel Mansell then Murray Walker on the Motorsport weekly stand yesterday and i'm now more than likely to attend the GP Masters at Silverstone.. Sounds like a great event!!

Don't agree with you at all on that point, the car park was full of dull cars with a very light sprinkling of 'interesting' cars. You're not going to fork out £40K+ for your first 'fun' car are you? I think Nick's (NCS) comment about a local, TVRCC presence is a far more valid one.

Funnily enough my wife and I were discussing this on the way home on Friday.There was a really odd cross section of people, but the vast majority were the wanna be's in their obligatory Ferrari gear, dribbeling over cars in the paddock, without a bl**dy clue about the cars.

I must admit that as an event I thought it was pretty poor, and an expensive one if you went on Sunday.

The Revival on the other hand! Wow! now there is an event! Real cars, real racers and real racing.

In defense of TVR, there was a black Sagaris at the F.O.S. I saw it go up the hill on Friday, in the Super Car batch, it was the first car up if I am not mistaken. I saw it in the Super Car Paddock on its return from the run up the hill and spoke to one of the guys with it, he was from the factory!!!

Since i was hanging around in Goodwood House quite abit maybe i didn't see the common folk (just kidding!)
To be honest Most motorshows are around 90% dreamers. I used to go every year from the age of 13 and could barely afford the entrance fee let alone anything on sale..

On the car front i took a lowly 407 and left the TVR at home as they predicted rain. (Me.. You.. Rain... Grass...TVR???... Thats Spins O'Clock!!) so i didn't judge by the carpark.
I judged more by who was there and who wasn't...and also by my Gut feeling...(Being my first FOS)

I used to work in the Double Glazing Industry (oo i await the comments!!) and we always exhibited at the NEC each year.. Cost us a fortune and got little work directly out of it..

I asked my MD why he spent so much money for so little return.. His response was that it was important in that industry to 'Show your Face' and be seen. The damage done by not being there was far greater than the direct sales from the event..

Bottom line, i think TVR should of 'Shown their face!'

Agree completely with TT Tim.
Festival of Speed was superb in its early days but now mostly attracts a different type of punter - more tuned into the socialising aspect of life.
The Revival Meeting however still attracts real Petrolheads.
Wonder what a car club stand would cost at the Revival? Anyone know?

We're talking about a company here who can't buy a £300 clutch...which part of them not paying for a stand at Goodwood is surprising you ?

Cant comment on that i'm afraid mate.. I'm basing my point on their Press release and pending appearance at the International Motor Show.

I suspect they'll be putting all their partying money into the British Motor Show, where ther will be a lot of people who might consider buying a car. But TVR never get it right for some folks, do they?

Well i'm always a true TVR supporter.. though i got that feeling at Goodwood that TVR as an exhibitor (not the odd car going up the strip) was sadly missed.

i dont personally believe that the big motorshows suit the Niché car makers much. Yes everyone there goes wooooooo and woooow and i guess it is a "show your face" thing but my money is on the more 'enthusiast' shows...but thats another story.

If it were me and i had the available cash, in the light of recent press (good & bad) making an appearance at Goodwood Festival of SPEED would be a good move..

Agreed. Whether the window lickers are buyers or not is largely irrelevant. It's all about flag flying.

It's also a great opportunity to 'create urban legends' - anyone who saw Mike Cross throw the bright yellow XKR up the hill in the wet will know what I mean. It was in stark contrast to the black Sagaris farting cautiously up the hill. Hopeless.

Phil Keen in an orange press car on a timed run or a smokin' 'em for the crowds run makes people talk about TVR in the excited, "WOW!" way the marque deserves.

First time at FOS too. I was a little disappointed, the cars just trundled up the hill ( Ok the Jag didn't, but the Ferrari's did - too interested in hanging out of the van and waving in the red jump suits). I believe if had gone and got my Cerbera, I'd given most cars a run for their money. The American cars sounded great, but they were useless on the fisr corner, as said on a previous post, that white Transit van was faster.

It's a real shame, when a private owner, SXS, is the only exhibitor of a Tiv. Come on TVR.

Bowler (oh, a TVR engine) had a massive presence and figured a great way to finance it - £15 well spent.

A bit of creative thinking is required. My wife designs car show stands for the majors and if money was a problem, the company she works for could have created a experiential stand that doesn't cost the earth.
