GKN diff

My GKN diff has started making a whirring noise, reasonably quiet, slightly more noticeable going round right bends & roundabouts. I took the car to my trusted TVR mechanic who checked underneath, took it for a spin, then told me that GKN diffs are built like tanks and at this mileage (54k) its nothing to worry about - a lot of diffs make noise. Now, the last diff I had that whirred ( not a TVR I hasten to add ) locked up at 70mph on the motorway, this is not an experience I particularly want to repeat.
So is this an OK thing ?

My GKN diff makes a whining noise most of the time. Has done since I bought it (at 10,000 miles). You can get an additive which makes it quieter if it bothers you.
