Which lubricant for T5 box?

Hi there

I´ve read on here somewhere that instead of the recommended ATF one could or even should use semisynth gearboxoil, but Mr Heaths bible says not to use anything other than ATF. So what do the experts say?
Think y have to change it since gears are harder to disengage when car is hot.

I use redline MTL in mine.It's designed to replace,and perform better,than ATF in box's that normally use ATF.It aint cheap,and i couldn't honestly comment on wear characteristics,but it does give a lovely smooth change when compared to ATF,and i've had no problems so far

BTW how much oil do you put in ?

You fill the box until it starts running out of the fill hole

about 1.75 ltrs

Use a semi-synthetic 75W-90 as ATF while nice and thin for good synchro performance is absolutly useless for gears and bearing wear
What will happen is the synchromesh will be slower when the box is stone cold
However you won't then weld your 5th gear to its shaft either.....

Now ATF is reccommended by Tremec who make the box but I have it on good authority ( the head of their technical sales dept) that the only reason this is done is to allow car manufacturers to reduce the different types of lubricant they have to stock / use and so reduce costs

I recently read in the Tremec manual that you should only use ATF for the T5 box as other lubricant types can damage the "blocking ring" material. I would rather use a EP type oil in a gearbox, but I've decided to stick with that recommended, mobil ATF.

Any more opinions? Btw the gearbox has done 76k and just started to get a little more noisy.
