MOT time again, and when it came to the emissions test all the numbers went off the scale - WRONG answer. The tester pointed out the high 02 and CO readings and by playing with the revs and throttle he could get them close but not close enough, so he called his mate over to explain the problem to me while he retested. "OI Steve, come and explain to this gentleman that he's got an air leak in the exhaust manifold that is throwing the readings out, so I can't possibly pass it like this. But mind you don't stand there blocking the tail pipes where I can't see you, otherwise the extra back pressure will push the readings down, now where was I ... oh, it seems OK now sir, must have been a temporary glitch."

I was a bit worried about the handbrake test too, but as we'd spent such a long time nursing it through the emission test it was getting a bit late so we agreed they were probably OK and no point wasting time on the rollers ...

TOP bloke!

Took my old Mk2 Golf GTi to an MOT place that came 'recommended'. Knew that I had a problem with the windscreen - there was a couple of bullet holes (not literally I must add) in the drivers view. Anyway, walked the car through and it passed... somewhat suprised I foolishly questioned the tester...

"could have sworn that you did that on the way home"....

Nice, just what I needed cos I was stoney then....

Cheers,

Paul

P.S. Mind you dont mention the 3 year old Honda 1.5LSi of my wifes that failed on emissions - and the 1.5 is the lean burn / fuel efficient / high economy engine.... Japanese engineering my arse....

I'd just realised that I was driving around with the MOT 1 week out of date, so hastily popped over to my local MOT man - bit worried as i've heard of emissions and handbrake probs, but I needn't have worried at all - passed no problems.

Mind u, the 17yr old that thought he'd get to drive it onto the ramp was disappionted when I hauled his ass outta there and drove it on myself

Quality!
Its good to know their are plenty of "friendly" garages still around.

Still, IMHO the MOT is not worth the paper its written on these days. There are a huge number of cars that simpily dont have one, and it cant be hard to get hold of a certificate if you do get stopped and need to produce one.

Annoying, especailly to the majority who put thier cars through every year.

Got me thinking - had the Golf and the Chimaera run out of MOT's within a month (doh dont you just love it when that happens!). Anyway, garage gives me the readings from the emissions test (is that a requirement?) so thought I would just check it up again.... Seems that the 4.0 V8 of British Beef is cleaner and better on the environment than the 1.8 16v of German precision engineering....

Ok, more to the story than that, but makes a good tale down the pub....

Cheers,

Paul

My friendly MOT tester has the attitude that the TVR is a 'kit car', whatever that may mean, so exempt from the emisions test...

My MOT tester is actually deaf and lipreads!

Very usefull as the exhaust on my red V6 M has no real silencers, just one small cherry bomb in each side!

I use a great guy in Nottingham who has the cleanest station I've ever seen. He doesn't to repairs or welding etc, just mot's. So he has no interest in making anything other then the test fee. He will adjust your maf, twiddle your lights and do his best to pass the test yet will be lenient with minor points. A top man in my opinion. If I have something wrong with my car I just take it to him and have him "test the underside" etc. Then when he says the ball joints shot or whatever I give him a fiver and we're both happy.
