Visited the Tvr centre at the weekend, and had a look at their Griffiths and Chimeras.

Started a couple up, but the 4.0l Chimera sounded way better (at idle) than the 5.0l Griffith.

Was thinking Griffith all the way upto this point, but am having second thoughts now....

Any comments???

You can do anything you like with the exhaust later - the 5.0 is a different animal to the 4.0 - don't choose between them based on idle noise!

Absolutely agree with above. My Cebera has had the "cats" taken out - and it sounds like rolling thunder. This is a very simple operation which can be easily done on any car.

mjr, dunno how 'au fait' you are regarding Tivdom but it is common practise to have the exhausts altered in some manner, this can vary between removing cats, pre cats or putting straight through pipes in the rear silencer. It sounds as if your 4.0ltr had something similar done (surprisingly cheap and effective) You can also have sports systems fitted from after market suppliers. Net performance gains are minimal but we 'enthusiasts' like to extract a bit more in the way of audible masturbation dontcherknow

I'd say go back down to Arkley with a tape recorder and make yourself up a recording of the 4 litre Chim. Then stick with your Eurobox, chuck the tape in your car player, whack up the volume, wind down the windows and save yourself 20K or so.

Liked the plan.....but unfortunatly mine is a Japbox, and someone nicked the stereo a while back .

Was obviously not planning on letting exhaust note determine my choice of TVR, but was simply suprised. Guess the exhaust modifications explain all - thanks.

Apache - Been lurking for a while listening in trying to gauge likely problems, running costs etc, but still lots to learn.

danny,

Just checked your profile - my Japbox might bring back some memories for you, its a 1990 Toyota GT4. Agree with you about being great fun on wet roundabouts, but I guess you exercise a little more caution in the cerbera!

Anyway, back to TVRs...

Try more than one as 'identical' specs differ considerably.

I took out a great 4.0 Chim from the TVR centre - a week later an 'identical' car sounded & handled like a dog.

If noise means everything to you - spend the same money on a well sorted Big Wedge!

Try a 5.0 with a half-sports exhaust... Nothing like it on this planet! The full sports is even better but a tad loud really. The 4.0 just doesnt get close in my estimation.

Cheers,

Paul

Matt, probably means your cats have disintegrated, I believe they destroy themselves slowly and mine is a poppin and a bangin louder and louder. Expecting any day now to experience a hic, burb and small bang as the remnants get spat out
