Discussions about space and a potential long-distance drive in a Chim have led me to wonder about the possibilities of relocating the Battery and other components to behind the seats in an effort to afford more legroom. Has anyone ever heard of such an undertaking?? or any reason why this is a good / bad idea. The boot was considered, but decided against as sparks and fuel isn't the best mixture in the world , and other than a good place to put yer jacket behind the seats seems pretty vacant.
I assume that if moving it is succesful then the resulting space could be carpeted to match??

Views much appreciated as always.

Reb.

Battery in the boot has been done. I wondered about the fuel and sparks issue out loud the other day and someone said that Jaguar have been doing this for years! Certainly other manufacturers have been putting batteries in daft places for years!

Should find several other threads about the details.

I think you will find that with the Jag there is a bulkhead between battery and fuel tank. Not the case with the Chimaera or Griff. The MSA rules say it is a no no unless the tank is boxed in (back to a bulkhead) again. I am not sure the insurers would like it either.

You would also need to make sure that the roof would still fit and I am not sure you would recover much in legroom as the ECU and its loom is still there.

But there is no fuel tank in the boot... or the tank venting system...

Best place IMHO would be 18" higher than where it is now (like a Cerb)

You'd have to be pretty keen, and a demon with the fibreglass though

Screws up the handling though as the 20-25 Kg that the battery ways adds considerable momentum to the car. Notiuced a big change when I replaced the standard battery with a a 5 KG race gel setup on the Wedge

The battery location is actually pretty good from a handling point of view: low and near the centre of the car.

Well when you are sprinting the car absolutely on the edge every weekend, and sometimes going beyond it, you tend to notice these things!

Anyway, don't you notice the car feeling more lively and chuckable when the fuel tank is nearer empty compared to full?

Original Mini has battery in the boot, mine has twin fuel tanks either side of the battery too!

i'd like to think so steve...but as the tank emptys during the day, i'm getting closer & closer to the edge anyway - hopefully!

full tank does help to keep the backend down it's true, but i can barely tell the difference of a passenger in the car !

must keep practising

cheers
