what to look for when buying a Cerbera
Discussion
Can anybody tell me what to be loooking for when buying a Cerbera.
I am a mechanic so I do know general pointers, but I am not very familiar with TVR's or Cerbera's for that matter!
I am looking at a budget of no more than £19k.
What are the things to be weary of?
Electrics - a mate of mine has had endless problems with his 4.2V8. A bit of vaseline helped no end.
Motor - the straight 6 as fitted to the Tuscan (if it's the same motor - I'm not sure) had a serious problem with the finger followers on some engines. See tuscan threads for details of age etc.
£19k sounds a bit optomistic IMO if you're after a newish car. Look through the PH Ads section to see what you might get for your money
there are loads of good cerbies to be had at 19K but there are probably a lot more dogs at that price. ensure the seller has loads of history for the car and that he follows the VERY important engine warm up routine. A car thrashed before it has had 15 mins to warm up properly will be shagged.
I say - go for a 97 or 98 4.2 or 4.5 at that price. BUT it is worth the premium to buy a good one.
Even if you do a serious amount of work yourself the aprts are expensive and you need lots of them! Engine work is best left to AJP experts and is expensive. ie parts and elapse. If you can get a car that has a decent engine, newish tyres, exhaust, battery, wheels, everything works etc then you are onto a winner.

Look for mine for sale on PH

More than anything make sure you've got enough money to run it. Even if you do find something that has been cherished and looks in great nick there are loads of electrical ancilliaries that can give up the ghost at a moments notice, and they are expensive.
But given all that on top of the things already mentioned check for water ingress (particularly in the footwells) and interior condition (which can be expensive to replace).
