I am just familiarising my self with my 96 Chim and am a bit confused by the immobiliser key. When I bought the car, I had to push the key into the rectangular hole on the steering column until the red light stopped flashing, then pull it out and start the car with the key as normal. Last night I fitted a new battery and now it seems to go off on its own when the key is near the steering column. Any comments from the great oracle that is pistonheads?

Not sure if I am understanding you correctly, but if I am: when unlocking the car - assuming it is by remote, the immobiliser will not re-immobilise for about 20-30 seconds. So, you can unlock and start up straightaway. If the red immobiliser light comes on (after 20-30) sec, then the car cannot be started. It is at this point that you should insert the black widget into its slot to extinguish the light - OR turn the ignition key until the dash warning lights come on - then press the alarm fob button again and it will be ready to start (a short cut used by most owners i the know). Hope this helps.
