We are off to the Isle of Wight next week for a couple of days, so does anyone have any recommendations as to which ferry company to use, (if there is a choice?).
Do we still need to book up this time of year?
And am i likely to get on without doing any damage? I guess one of the companies is Red Funnelscratchchin.

The red funnel goes from Southampton, theres also one that goes form Portsmouth www.wightlink.co.uk I've never taken mine over there so cant comment on boarding etc. Sahnklin's a lovely place to visit, altho it may be a bit colder there now!

Another islander with a TVR here...

I prefer Red Funnel - They seem a bit more organised than Wightlink at the moment. If you have a TVR don't go on the top deck though, as they don't fit.

Booking helps if it's Friday, Saturday or Sunday, but it's not too bad at this time of year.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, we are now booked with Red Funnel,
Sorry Pauline, can't do food this weekend, though might be ok for this fridayscratchchin Aroma or Huffer? Sounds like secret code words don't it eh?
Diane and I decided that we needed a few days break. I think you know the reason why, as both Mums seem to be doing ok at the moment(touch wood).so we thought that we would strike whilst the iron is hot! Mail me with your thoughs on friday evening will ya.

sorry had an early night, but we wont`go into that

daves right, red funnel most helpful, tell the guys you need to go downstairs, some try to convince you you have the ground clearance of a landrover! watch out for the landward side of the ramp at southampton, depending on the tide, angle of ramp, this can be a bit of a highish hump but should be okay.
be sure to visit our coconut and banana shops, we`ve had a really good summer this year, and please give the horse and carts a wide berth when overtaking.

I have taken my chim over on the Portsmouth to Fishbourne (Ryde) Wightlink crossing and this was fine, got the bus to the Bestival though . Also over from Yarmouth to Lymington on the return trip (same company) was fine.
Using the RedFunnel Southampton Town Quay to East Cowes, I would concurr with the others above go on the lower deck. Having taken a Focus up the steep concrete ramp with large speed bumps to the upper decks I don't think the Tiv would have made it.
Also beware using the Chain Ferry accross the River Medina between East Cowes (Redfunnel Car Ferry) and West Cowes (Civilisation). It would be ok a few hours eitherside of High Water but beware at low water, steeper entry angle. It takes about 45 mins to drive around from East to West Cowes.

Advice? Get a second mortgage. It's the most expensive piece of water to cross in the world, £/mile. So I'm told.

Did the Yarmouth/Lymington crossing in August. No problems in the S at all, and really quick and easy crossing. thumbup

There's only one petrol station on the island with Super unleaded that we found and it's the Texaco garage on the Cowes/Ryde road
Lushington Garage
High Street
Ryde
Isle Of Wight
PO33 4RD

Blankgang chine to Alum bay and around again to newport are great roads but everwhere else we went at 20-30mph.

The ferry company were great and treated us like royalty.

When it`s time to start your engines for disembarking, a good bootful of throttle and a thunderous roar can be heard. It turns heads, if you do it right Clivef will know you`ve arrived hehe
