Ok, so it's Clash of The Titans...

Sparta versus Rome, Ali verus Foreman, David versus Goliath (actually probably Goliath versus Goliath)

A friend of mine is looking at joining the TVR community (he's seen the light)

He was looking at a Sag, much to my delight.

He now seems to have swung in favour of a late model, 4.5 Cerb (Henley Heritage has a nice one)
Now I know very litle about the Cerb (sorry folks) except they're mightily fast of course.

I think the Sag is an amazing vehicle (and quite forgiving if you get it wrong)
He reckons the Cerb is far quicker though, and more fun altogether.

What do you lot think?

The Sag may well be the better track car because of it's nimble handling, but in the real world if you want ultimate gut-wrenching acceleration and feel-good factor you cannot beat a well tuned cerb. No other TVR comes close for grin-inducing performance when your foot hits the carpet.

But then it depends what your benchmark is. I've driven neither a Cerb nor a Sag, so I'm not one to talk really. Except that you can put the TVR driving experience in a class of its own sometimes. You've just named two amazing cars; even in mortal hands both are very quick; however you look at it either is fantastic performance for your shilling. Overall I think your question is flawed because either you come to the conclusion that either is fanastic in its own way and you can show a bit of favouritism only on the basis that one excites you more than the other, or......they're both killing machines that are not to be touched without someone else's bargepole!!!

Sag v Cerb?

Claret v Beaujolais - both very tasty and adictive and too much'll knock you into the middle of next week!!!!

Than-que, than-que - but I have driven my Tuscan home from its service this evening and am currently enjoying a rather lovely Cahors - so I still can't comment on the Cerb or the Sag! paperbag

Sag - better handling so safer, more recent model so better residuals (hopefully), and personally, I like the looks better.

Cerb - pillbox view, already taken the depreciation hit so cheaper, also gorgeous looking.

They both feel equally fast, but the Sagaris is easier to drive at the higher speeds unless you have the adjustable Nitron shocks or similar setup on the Cerbie.

Big bills on both.

And in comparison to Ferraris or Porkers, they both feel as unrefined. And they are both wayyyyy cooler. But then, so is a Griffith or Chimaera or Tamora or T350t. TVRs are so bloody cool and sexy!

Sag everytime:

Better looking - well it is a newer design..........but will it age wellscratchchin???
Better handling - what do you expect from only 350bhp, much easier to control than a 400bhp Cerbhehe
More Expensive - again it's a newer model, but how long before it hits the £30k markscratchchin??....
Better sound - Debateable......

OK OK I'll take the Cerb............thumbup

In all seriousness though the Sag looks absolutely stunning in the flesh, it's a newer model and ultimately handles better than the Cerb. If I was your mate I'd buy a nicely sorted powerful Cerb and run it for at least six months, if he's still hankering for a Sag then he's still got the option to sell the Cerb and then buy a Sag.

That sounds like a good idea.

Having owned both I can say that the Sagaris handles far better and is quicker and more secure round the twisties - the Cerb however felt far more unstable, I never had the confidence to push the Cerb but the Sag was a different matter. I guess a good suspension system and upgrades could help cure that.

As for outright speed and acceleration the Cerb actually felt quicker for me. Over 130 I would say the Cerb is king - it just seemed to keep on going . And as for sound I had the Cerb decatted and it was just the dogs, popping and banging like it was no-one's business. The Sagaris, although nice, is far more refined in comparison (for my tastes anyway).

In terms of running costs the Cerb was far more expensive, although I did buy the Sag new and the Cerb was 3-4 years old so perhaps that's an unfair comparison.

I think guys like PinkPanther etc are the best ones to comment as they have had the 'pleasure' of both..
I know Yellow Peril has also owned both (currently owns a Sag) so perhaps Ray n Pauline could add something..

After speaking to Ray about this very subject, i would say that it is the suspension department where things have really moved on since the cerb. I dont think anyone would deny the sheer grunt of the Cerb's AJP8 but in the handling stakes the Sagaris is streets ahead.

Also, and this is from a 90's TVR owner, Build quality & Reliability etc has certainly improved significantly along with interior components etc too..

Obviously you're initial outlay of cash is likely to be much greater with the Sag. and at present the car is likely to depreciate alot further than a 2nd hand Cerb..

But as with all TVR's what one man/woman loves another hates so ultimately take a decent length test-drive in both and decide from there..

cheers,

Nick

Also speaking from owning/driving both. Cerb is more scary/unpredictable, but a similarly set up cerb and sag would be a close run thing: like to see a drive off over a long straight.

For me, the Sagaris takes it, not by dint of being a "safer" drive, but simply from being more driveable... if that makes sense. As far as the twisties are concerned the Sag takes it every time. Knockhill was fantastic yesterday. And not a hope in hell of doing the same things with a cerb.

Having driven both I would say the Sag is a much better car to drive. The Cerb was unrefined and lacked the poise and power delivery you get from the Sag. Also in my experience the Sag was a little more reliable.

I'm sure the Cerb is much cheaper and so you could off set the running costs against the saving in purchase price. So in conclusion yu should try both and buy the one you like

The Cerb has moved on a bit since it's early days and now benefits from some tasty suspension upgrades that puts it on a par with the Sag. As for power it appears that both the 4.5 Cerb and the Sagaris both suffer from "TVR Quoted" figures (420bhp and 406bhp respectively), fortunately there are now some good TVR Indies who can remap the Cerb to near 400bhp and beyond, and up against one of these a Sagaris will struggle even with 406bhp, as for std versus std then it's a lottery as it depends on how well it was fettled at the factory as well as how well the owner(s) have looked after it.

Although I was surprised by how quick the Tuscans were compared to the Cerb's at Santa Pod back in April this year. Correct me if I'm wrong here Joo, but from memory only the Cerb you've breathed on regulalry ran faster. One Tuscan that I know well (standard 3.6) consistently ran 12.7 to 12.9 and the other that I don't know, but which I believe is a standard 4.0 (non S or red rose) ran 12.4. The Cerbs by comparison I think all pretty much ran in the 13's.
