Understanding paint codes!
Discussion
right, followed the helpful guide so far to tracking down paint codes etc so as i can have a small pot of touch up paint made.
I have now been faxed a formulation report following me providing TVR paint codes etc.
I dont have a clue what they are on about. I have 2 faxes, one confirming "ingrediants" for the undercoat and one for the main layer. These are to make up 1 litre and can they be reduced accordingly for the little pot i want.
can someone now tell me what i do with these reports? who do i take these to so they can make it up? will they do it in a small enough pot for just touch up paint? Any idea on cost? will I have to use an undercoat and then main layer or will they be mixed as per usual touch up paints? Will I need to apply any additional laquer to get the same finish?

Take your "formulation report" to a Halfords that have a paint mixing service.
The report should give a set of numbers of base colours that Halfords stock. Initially they will mix a small test quantity that you can judge as being right/wrong.They will do this whilst you wait.
Dont forget that your car colour will have faded over the years so its unlikely you will get an exact match-OK for stone chips and small areas.
You shouldn't need anything else apart from some elbow grease to cut it in. Worked for me.

thanks John - your previous "guide" was invaluable too!
I will call the local Halfords and ask if they offer this service. As a bit of a dummy with regards to these things, what do you mean by "cutting it in"?
and will it remain an undercoat and a "top" layer or in one pot? oh, and any idea on how much?
sorry for all the questions
You will need to find somone who has a PPG mixing machine. We use ICI. Whats the paint code.

For a quick paint insight, look up my earlier thread - Matching Colour Paint dated 23rd September 2002.
ICI have ceased in the automotive paint business and they have now been taken on by PPG who are Autocolour.
My local Halfords have a large "Guide" giving ICI and PPG formulation reference numbers therefore they shouldn't have a problem in recognising what is needed.
The second number on your VIN plate as you know is the ICI number but apparently the track record of TVR and paint numbers was not always 100% correct, Halfords do list some of these numbers for TVR so you may be lucky.
You can have quantities from a touch up tube for about £3 up to a spray can for about £6 or a larger quantity but I don't know the larger quantity price.
My Halfords is not on the High Street but on a Business Park, I don't think the High Street would have the paint machine.
You wouldn't need to put down - Primer, Gloss and Finish, its a one coat paint.
Hope this helps

Ture. ICI are now owned by PPG but they are still supplying paint to the motor trade under the name of NEXA.

cheers Jon - will post on here tomorrow.
Alan - might try the Halfords in Segensworth rather than the one in Hedge End then. Sounds like its the larger outlets that may be able to help.
John Mac - it was actually that september posting that I referred to in the first place to get the right coding to ring autonexa or whatever they were called! I now have the "ingrediants" from them!
god life was simple when I owned a MG

That code is on our ICI system so it could be mixed by someone who stocks ICI. Try a paint supplier like Brown Brothers or ask them for the nearest ICI supplier to you.
