Need help! I'm thinking about supercharging my Chim - its a spotless 95 m plate 4 litre with 26k on the clock. I've only just got it so yet to meet other TVR owners to discuss this but has anyone supercharged their Chim? - if so would you do it again? was it a nightmare - caused any problems, what sort of power can you expect? Can the car handle it!

I really like the chim as it is at the moment but the idea of of more power is very tempting. I scoured the UK looking for the best early example I could find and paid a decent amount for this one and drove it the 500 miles home - would I destroy the car by supercharging ie - when I come to sell it after a few years will it be seen as a risky buy because its non-stock and modified?

would love to hear from anyone with a story to tell about Supercharging (thinking about paying Scotlands only TVR registered garage to do this for me at a cost of 4-5k - garage is called Dreadnaughts near Stirling)

thanks!

That's not a lot of money for a supercharger conversion, make sure they know what they're taking on and that you are both clear exactly on what basis they're doing the work. Exactly what are you going to get, and if it takes twice as much work as they expect who takes the hit?

Most definitely! I would want everything in writing! this figure was just thrown up in conversation with them as they checked out the Chimn for me when I first got it - To be honest I got a really good feeling that they know what they are doing as their garage and attitude was just excellent. I'll really need to go pay another visit and talk about it in more detail - it does sound like its going to be very costly and I'll have to decide if its worth doing - we are, after all, talking the same amount of money I paid for my Triumph Daytona bike - it would have to be sold if I did this!

Seem like a nice helpful bunch - now, if only I can get the money together!

------------------

Your car is 1995 and in that year TVR changed the V8 to Serpentine engines, the engine ancillary equipment being driven via a 25mm wide 7 rib belt. Prior to this the equipment was driven by a V-Belt system. The Supercharger system is only suited to the Serpentine builds, therefore please check whether your engine is pre or post Serpentine. If pre, you can upgrade the engine to Serpentine, but there are costs involved.
The SC400 is fantastic car and has tremendous drive-ability, you can drive on holiday, to the shops or have an exhilarating drive on track. Power delivery is exceptionally smooth with no sudden surges to catch you out. It is a pleasure to drive, the power achieved is greater than a modified 5.0 litre, power being around 320Bhp an increase of around 80 Bhp (30%+)
Your car has perfect mileage and is well suited.
Whether you upgrade brakes and suspension depends on your anticipated usage. The Supercharger does not increase the speed of the car, only the acceleration, therefore for normal road driving there is little need to improve brakes. If you use your car on the track, the power will work the brakes harder and a brake upgrade to 5.0 spec. would be recommended. This is not a major cost, as I believe the 5.0 brakes are Ford parts.

Cost of the total Supercharger system is £3999 + vat. This includes Supercharger, specialized secondary plenum for smooth power delivery, heat shields and induction system. In addition, TVR Power will charge approx £500 to install the unit and provide a bespoke ECU chip and mapping service.

I suggest you visit Coventry and drive the SC400 demonstrator. We are also building the SC450 and SC500 versions now, demonstrators being available shortly.

If you require any further information, please take contact with me. 07768 863434

The power figures are a bit confusing. If it is a real 320 bhp that does make it into modified 500 teritory but compared to a real world 4 litre with 200 ish bhp, that is an increase of some 50% and not the 30% that has been claimed. If the power increase is the 80 bhp then real world bhp would be around 280 ish and about the same as a good standard 500.

It is not clear exactly what is what or how it would be explained to an insurance company. PS most have got wise to the 'modded engine is only bringing the power upto TVR's spec' ploy.

Confusing or am I missing something?

Claire @ Dreadnought is a whizz when it comes to stuff like this.
She has worked on some major speed projects.

I have driven the Supercharged Power Chim and it was bloody amazing and we followed it in the LW Cerb on the PowerTour round the Alps and it wasnt exactly slow then (Was it Howard..? although he nearly crashed whilst laughing at me having my feet out of the window), if only I had the dosh...

Trust me - do it!

Marc Hockin and I were fortunate enough to take the SC400 Supercharged Chimaera over to the Nurburgring and then onto Spa and the conversion was simply faultless!

Power streamed in with no side affects i.e. any characteristics that would unbalance an inexperienced driver. A very quick car that was not embarrassed by Cerbera 4.5 on the four figure trip.

I'm currently writing a review that will hopefully be in Sprint soon.

I used to own a 400 and know a 500, would I have made the change if this conversion had been available then? Maybe not.

Talk to Dom, he's a good guy - a proper fettler!
