Help Please - Average MPG??
Discussion
Hi Guys and girls
I need to get a car for work that will cover c20k a year. We will be trading in our old family car as the Mrs has now got a co. car. My immediate thought is diesel something however (quite surprisingly) Julie has stated that she does not want three cars (we have a wedge already) or me driving an old mans car! and suggested I have a newer TVR as my daily hack!!!!
Now most of you by now would be at the dealers but I only get 15mpg from the wedge and given I can only claim 14p permile from the company I can see this being expensive despite saving on insurance and tax etc.
By the way I do track days too!!
So to cut to the chase what sort of MPG do you get from your Griff's, Tuscs T350's and Tamoras?
Cheers
Richard

Is her reason for not wanting 3 cars down to cost, if so I would say that you will still be better off running 3 than putting 20k pa on pretty much any tiv. Depreciation caused by that mileage alone will be a killer before you add in servicing 3 times a year, clutches, tyres and of course the petrol. To answer the question, Cerbs (not mentioned in your list I note
) can do about 25mpg+ if driven on a gentle motorway run for instance, obviously less in town traffic but that is the same for all cars.

I have no idea whay sort of economy I get out of the Griff - the needle on the fuel guage goes down, I fill it up again - simple
Same applies with the BMW.
And I chop down trees for a living - Im an environmentalists nightmare
What I can tell you is that several people in the region have been in a similar situation & have bought oil burners as a cheap third car & it works out really well for them.
Tell you more on Sunday
Nick

Hi Richard,
What ever you do, let your head rule your heart and stay well away from anything that starts with Cerber.
Try and convince Julie you need an V6 Alfa to sit alongside the wedge, you know how much you like them.

I use my T350 for work sometimes and get about 20mpg or so.
Don't forget that, even if you only get 14p from your Company, you can claim more in tax relief from the Inland Revenue.
Upto 10,000 miles a year is 40p per mile (you therefore get tax relief on the 40p - 14p)
After that is 25p per mile (i.e. 25p - 14p from then on)

Hi John, not in Russia then?! V6 Alfa, no i need a daily driver, not one that works once every six months!
How you doing? Linda ok? What does the current stable consist of?
Expresso - thank you - very good tip, I had not thought of that, fancy completing my tax return?!

I am Richard, 9 hrs flight time East of Moscow, its 10.40 Saturday morning here and I'm busy earning a crust.
Get as new a T350 as you can afford with A/C would be my honest advice. Fuel consumption will be bewteen 18-28 mpg I would imagine.
We're both fine, our current stable is two sags, tamora, S turbo, V50 T5 estate and the 851.......hence current location

On a run up the length of the M5/M6 to the lake district, my Cerbera got 27mpg I think. My usual mixed driving gets around 22mpg.
London Thunder sunday I used a whole tank for 200 miles, but we did have the engine running for about 6-7 hours of that.
Obviously it depends on how much you use the loud pedal.

Well Dickie - I reckon to get 25mpg out of my 4.5 Cerb if I don't spend too much time in boring old towns, cruising legally on the motorway ( as I'm sure you do!) is less than 3000rpm - So I reckon a Cerb is the car for you - room for Julie in the front and kids in the back. I can see you in a California sage green 4.5 myself - I wonder where
you might find one?

Did you know you can claim back the tax on up to 40p per mile for company mileage (up to 10K miles, and 25p beyond that), so you could claim back the tax on the remaining 26p the company doesn't pay you for.
Suprised you only get 14 mpg from the wedge, I normally get 17 or 18 mpg. If you're doing a lot of miles then it might be worth paying the money for a Mark Adams chip as this will improve your mpg somewhat, it is a good excuse anyway.

Just leaving aside TVR mpg for sec, this is what I have been getting from my non-Tiv cars over extended mileages...
X-type V6 2.0 - 26 mpg measured over 5000+ miles (disappointing car, disappointing performance!)
LAguna GT 205 - 31 mpg measured over 3000+ miles, mainly M27, M3, A34 with cruise set at 77 mph (bloody quick but not as easy to drive as the Chim!)
Berlingo Van - 44 mpg (the Chim needs the brakes off this van - it'll almost do stoppies!)
and now the Chimaera 400....... ~23 mpg so far including some 'spirited' driving trying to discover its performance envelope - for safety reasons of course!
I've only had my Chim since the beginning of October but have done over 3000 miles in it already. I would happily use it every day, its just that I feel, rightly or wrongly, putting a lot of miles on is going to drop the value when/if I want to change/sell. Fuel consumption is not the issue for me, rather keeping it in fine fettle.

My 4.0 Chim has done 26+ mpg on a sensible cruise (doesn't happen very often)
Down to 10ish mpg on the london thunder 4 to 5 hour crawl.
13-15mpg in heavy commuting traffic / lead foot driving.
20ish mpg average in non commuting driving.
Just fill her up and enjoy it (until the needle is close to 'E')

I am sure it will be cheaper to get a cheap economical hack than do big milage in a TVR ( or similar ).
To answer your questions, my pre-cat 4.0 Griff will do about 25 when driven carefully, but 19mpg is a more realistic figure for my "fun" driving which is what it gets used for. My 350i used to do 24 & 18 respectively.
Diesel Corsa does over 50, so given a decent annual milage, the fuel saving alone pays for the overheads of an extra car ( extra tax / insurence etc )
An interesting point for you, we also have an MX5 which is a compromise between being fun & economic.
That used to averige about 27MPG. When the above Corsa was off the road for a month, the I used the MX5 for work everyday, and it was doing 32 MPG. I was amazed at the difference. doing 100 miles a day, ( when I am at home ) each MPG makes a difference. Then again, its only about the same ( 5 / 6 MPG ) that the TVR's give depending whether your having a blast or going the same speed as everyone else.

Griff does around 15mpg average which isn't great. If you buy a £15k Mondeo what will it be worth in 3 years - £4-5k tops? Personally, I can't see any sub £20k Tiv depreciating anywhere near that so get a good un and enjoy it. We've had a daily Driver Griff for 3 1/2 years and although it does give more grief than my company car it ain't that bad - although only covering 6-10k pa.
