Peugeot have finally shut the Ryton plant and made redundant the workforce. However the way they have done this is far different from the TVR situation. Peugeot workers were paid over Christmas and will receive at least 1 years salary in redundancy. The Peugeot workers are also in an area of low unemployment. I heard a Peugeot worker on the radio this morning who was angry about the way he and his friends were treated, but he has not gone through what the TVR workers have had to put up with.

Yes, I thought that - on Five Live this morning.
Funny how TVR was completely ignored (again) in that piece.

Its a different commodity though, Peugeot and TVR; just about the only thing they have in common is that they are both cars. That said, the union has really helped the workers at Pug in getting new work / identifying opportunities etc (I know this because my partner works for the LSC), and have also helped arrange protests at Peugeot dealers etc to protest in the manner in which the Ryton workers were treated.

I just don't get that impression with TVR. Am I wrong?

I know the Ryton workers may be annoyed! However at least they have a minimun of 1 year's salary. NS has given the Blackpool workers nothing, stopped them from even gaining unemployment benefit, removed the TVR name from one company, resigned as a director of another and swanned off to Austria and all will be happy in the future for him!

TVR is relatively small next to Peugeot so it's easy to see why it's not mentioned. Compare and contrast though - both allegedly moving production to cheaper labour rates (i believe Peugeot are moving to Eastern Europe where labour rates are lower - I don't believe TVR will re-start production in Italy or anywhere else)Peugeout paid redundancy, TVR didn't. However, there was a HUGE piece in the Times Business section yesterday on TVR and Nikolai legging it to Austria. Very interesting reading - should be available on Times online I would imagine.
