TVR sells off production arm

Blackpool Automotive moves offshore

Nikolai Smolenski has left the building.

TVR Sagaris: best TVR ever?
TVR Sagaris: best TVR ever?
According to  a lengthy analysis by the Sunday Times this weekend, TVR's Russian owner resigned as director of Blackpool Automotive, the company's production arm, on 13 December 2006, along with Mike Penny, TVR’s long-standing production director. And Blackpool Automotive was sold this weekend, to whom is currently not public knowledge.

Meanwhile, Smolenski still owns TVR Motors and David Oxley remains managing director, according to the story, but the company owns only the intellectual rights to the TVR name. Oxley insists that TVRs will continue to be produced but not in Britain, according to the story.

While this seems as if Smolenski has met his stated aim of selling off the production arm and moving it overseas, the law states that that the buyer of a loss-making business has to undertake that the business can meet its liabilities -- which in this case could include costs of redundancy and holiday pay allegedly owed to staff still employed when the company went into administration. The figure is said to be as high as three million pounds.

Add that into the £30 million Smolenski is said to have already spent on TVR, the cost of acquiring and then disposing of sizeable chunks of it could reach £40 million, according to the story.

Attempts to contact TVR to find out more have been in vain -- no-one's answering the phone.

Apart from a handful of glory years, TVR has limped from crisis to crisis since its inception in 1947. While things look bad, especially for any workers who ended up without pay over Christmas, it wouldn't be wise to assume that we've seen the last of the iconic Blackpool company.

The corporate laws in this country need sorting. Burberry have rewarded their workers with £30 voucher! This Government are only interested in donations to them and votes! Someone shopuld stand up and make NS accountable for his actions.

If I was the MP for Blackpool; this would be my number one topic! The MP has been sympathetic to the TVR workers but has hardly championed their cause.

I am surprised there has been no coverage of Lord James of Blackheath's AC cars plan on here! If he was to get a new factory in Blackpool; he would have a loyal and dedicated workforce!

If there was funding and support this would be a popular move.

Her last action in the house was to write a letter to the transport secretary asking him to make a statement on levels of bus usage. Says it all

Lord James (whose brother incidentally owns a TVR) was only interested in a factory in Blackpool to make "Smart AC's" and in return was willing to make the bodies for TVR. No poimt in him pursuing that anymore

Is anyone in the government interested in manufacturing? Everywhere I go I see more factories closing than opening! The only thing I see being built are warehouses for all the goods that we import.
Bernd Pischestrieder once said "you English are conducting an experiment with your manufacturing industry that we Germans are watching with interest"
It's an experiment that will have far reaching consequenies when the only employment is in Tescos and casinos.
Why doesn't the govenrnment step in to support these companies BEFORE the end is in sight.
If the DTI had consistantly supported Rover and TVR with R&D and manufacturing assistance, then there would be no need to debate who should pay the workers off.
After all, could you see the German government letting Volkswagen go bust?

We only have ourselves to blaim in the UK for the closure of manufacturing of a vast range of goods not just cars. The British, that's you and me, want cheap goods. We want our cars cheaper than the rest of us, we want Tesco's and other retailers to keep dropping prices, we get excited when we hear about 75% discount sales etc... The only way demand can be fulfilled is by buying all the goods in cheap from countries that pay peanuts to their workforce.

So before we all complain to the Government and MPs about another manufacturing plant being closed, think twice about where and what you buy and think why it's so cheap!!

Great Britain was once a great country, but we have gone to the dogs over the past few decades and I don;t think we can ever get it back...

But that is the problem, products are imported for next to nothing but then they are sold on at a well over inflated price, and all that is happening is we are getting Shite quality products which do not last and then have to buy several instead of one which in the end makes the product more expensive than a good quality product that could have been made in the UK.

Look at Steel, the British made products, were the best in the world, now we get all the shite coming in from India, China etc which is no way near the same quality.

So if NS's company only owns the TVR name, who owns the intelectual property rights to the existing range?

is it just me or can anyone else smell something rotten?
