confused

Chav ?

Its the press who've put him in that 'ambassador' position, not him. Out of interest, who do you think would be a great ambassador then ?

I agree Lazy. This country is so fickle. You did'nt hear people slagging him off when he was curling some of the sweetest free kicks past foreign goalkeepers to put England through to another round.
Anyway, so what if his move IS for money. Who bloody well would'nt!

Fair play David Beckham, and good luck oulde son.

Becks is actually quite a nice bloke IMO - sure he's not the sharpest tool in the box and some of his tattoos are apallingly trashy but he's a Brit who's done good. He's made the very most out of being able to kick a ball about better than most people. Can't we applaud that...?

Just to quality the above, I am not a football fan at all, but I see the bloke in the press and he does get a lot of flak for no just reason IMHO.

His missus on the other hand...

I know this is not a sports forum, but with the exception of Greece at Old Trafford, when?

Beckham's not a Chav, apart from which I can't think of a more successful (on and off of the pitch) British footballer. Agreed he may not be conventionally bright, but he's astute enough to have amassed a large fortune and to have surrounded himself with some very commercially sharp people. As far as being an ambassador is concerned, who would be better for British sport and bring as much commercial clout ? = no-one else. What other world class global sportsmen do we have ?.

I think both his and his wife's sense of decency would put many of their dettractors to shame. They both do a lot for charities, raising awareness of people less fortunate that us and they've never set themselves up as ambassadors. Not only that but they are the first people to make fun of themselves. It's just a shame the press and public don't share their sense of humour (the thrones at their wedding was done for a bit of fun, for example).

People knock Beckham for low intelligence which I think is a bit unfair. He may not have a set of GCSEs but he's as successful for his business dealings as he is from his football earnings. Vic too must by now be on her way to earning more from fashion than she ever did from singing, and if you'd ever seen her on her briefly-aired chat show, you can see that she's got a decent sense of humour and doesn't take herself too seriously.

I don't like footy at all, and I'm no fan of the singing or fashion side of their businesses, but I do get a bit bored of people knocking successful Brits all the time, just because they don't measure up to whatever standards they've arbitrarily laid out for themselves.

Agreed - Beckham should be seen as a British hero - he is a very talented sportsman, and is also a thoroughly decent, honest and upstanding bloke. His wife is a prawn, but she ain't no chav either.

Beckham isn't as thick as you might believe - he has created a brand name from his surname, and as a result has built up a diverse portfolio of business interests, all of which seem to have the Midas touch. He seems unable to do anything wrong as far as enterprise and business is concerned.

Have a look at most Premiership footballers, then consider whether Beckham is the scumbag.

Agreed also. I tried to dislike him because he is the stereotypical football millionaire but all it did was reinforce what a good ambassador he is for the sport and the country. Victoria comes across as a very affable and pleasant lass too.
To lambast the guy for what he is seems churlish IMO.

jealousy is a mortal sin....

I don't begrudge the airhead at all good on him I say. The slavering meeja in the UK portrays what they think people want to see him as, and as such he garners the type of opinion posted here.

The only time I felt like O wanted to smash his head in was the 1998 World cup where he got sent off... dickhead!

Don't get me wrong I don't mind him at all. He seems to be as we say 'a canny lad' but as over rated, hyped up, mediocre english sportsmen he's right at the top of the tree. Mainstream world class english sports men? don't make me laugh
mainstream= football,rugby,cricket,athletics,narrow minded maybe

Would that be a bad thing?

Honestly?
