Can I?
What with?

I've got to take mine off to get to the b@start manifold bolts and it looks like hell so I thought while its off I'd paint it.
Just black please. No offers to create a spectraflair starter

Not an expert but I'd give it a good rub down with wet/dry and a wipe over with degreaser and then hammerite it black or spray it with a stove enamel.

Get out of it.
I've got all the other bolts off and fought with the lower bolt on #6 (OS, third back from the front) but it's impossible to get a spanner down to the bottom bolt on #8 (OS, fourth back)
I've got little hands BB but even I can't get a spanner down there from the top, and the starter is in the way from the bottom - I'm still picking the crud from my eyes from trying!

Take it to your local repair man.

He'll strip it down, bead blast it, put new bushes and brushes into it, replace the solenoid, and paint it for around £130 inc vat.

It'll be good for another.... whatever.

Righto, I've got the little swine off the car.
It's highlighted that I need a new 1/2 ratchet with a little less give in the ratchet.
Since I've got some black smooth hamerite its going to get a dose of that

For anyone else looking to remove the starter motor, here's some handy hints;

You will need one of these..

And a short extension bar, and a GOOD ratchet.

A trick I was told by Aaron.C.Reskew is to locate the tool into the hex bolt, attach the extension and give it a sharp clout to send a shock down the bolt thread. Sounds like great advice so I thought I'd pass it on.
Oh, and add a small wipe of Coppaslip down the bolt threads on refitting too. Thanks for the tips Ian thumbup
