CAN ANYONE ADVISE ME ON WHAT ARE THE BEST PADS FOR MY 500 CHIM. HAVE PUT ON EBC TURBO GROOVE DISCS AND "GREEN STUFF" PADS 2OO MILES AGO. DONE A TRACK DAY (SHORT CIRCUIT) AND WHEN I STOPPED THEY WERE SMOKING LIKE A TROOPER. NOW THEY ARE SQUEELING WERY BADLY ON HEAVY BRAKING. DO I BIN THEM OR WILL THEY BE OK.

Could be either you've heat-glazed them ,or you have actually gone down to the rivets and are scoring hell out of the discs!
If it were me (ahem) I'd pull the pads out and if there was enough meat left, take an abrasive disc to them to knock the glaze off... but I couldn't possibly recomend this as a remedial action for you.

What sort of squeeling???, do they look ok to the eye??, it might be worth your while taking them out and re-fitting them and greasing them up.

Thanks for the reply. it is no so much as a squeal as in rivets to metal (lots of meat left) but more a rough rubbing noise but i have had the wheels off and had a good look and it all looks fine. If they are "glazed" will they clear themselves.

I use greenstuff pads. They have a habit of making this grinding noise during normal road use following hard use on a track day. I'm certain it's down to glazing as a few hard applications to clean them up again & the noise dissapears.
Did you do a cool down lap BTW?

If glazed or the green stuff have gone black then throw them away and get new ones. They have overheated and become next to useless.

I have used EBC green bads in downhill mountainbike's (same or similar compound i believe), and, in my experiance, they work really well from cold, but overheating is an issue with them -for mountainbikes EBC do a red pad as well which was better for this kind of work but took time to get up to temperature, so was not as good when the pads were cold. They will almost deffinatly be glazed, and yes, given time this will probably clean up itself -this will happen far quicker driving in the wet though as the water molecules act like small solid particals to wear the surface off the pad faster. -mud is even better for this, but you are less likely to be hub deep in maddy water in a car....

Or take the pads out and use some fine emery cloth to take the surface off them -may take a wee while to bed in again after that though.

I must drive like a wuss then because I never managed to get the Greenstuff pads to fade. In fact the harder I pushed them the more bite they gave, even with extreme abuse like threshold braking from 120+ to 20 mph. All very reassuring. But the disc wear rate was a bit of a problem when pushed hard (discs wear faster than the pads).

gone black my rear ones have gone black, proving the V8S 'too much rear brake bias' theory , does that really mean they're shot as they have only done one track day and 800 miles in total .
Other than the colour I have been impressed with their stopping ability so far and am keeping a close eye on Disc wear rates, which as Peter H has said does seem to be highish.

No. I hate brakes that I have to apply a bit to see which side of the road they will pull and brakes that die once they get hot. I also find their claims for disc friendliness a joke as they are the most abarsive pad I have come across. As discs are sevewral times more expensive than pads, I don't see the finnuy side of that. Had no end of problems with them which I don't see with other makes.

I do buy pads in bulk as I get through them - around 10-15 sets a year in a heavy track/sprint season on the 520 and Griff - tried Greens on many occassion and they have been consistently bad. Talking to many fellow competitive drivers, they have had the same experiences and don't rate them either.

I know some people love them but I don't!

1. If they are black then the chances are they have got too hot. Nothing to do with rear bias theory etc as the temp is determined by disc and pad size and whether you left the handbrake on or had the handbrakle adjusted too tight.

2. Are they shot! Past their best I would say. At Mallory I got through two sets of Greens in a day. Couldn't get anything else and in this case they are better than nothing so your track day could well have killed them. The rear brakes don't do that much so a bit of reduced braking efficiency is not going to be that terrible and EBCs are cheap so might be worth replacing them.

I am currently using Ferodo 3466 (DS2000 predecessor) which I bought in bulk and they are very very good. I'll switch to DS2000 when I use them up. Running them in both the GRiff and 520. Mintexx 1144's are not quite as good but consistent. Tarox Red Spot are also a fave but the pads are soft and don't last long.
